At the end, I got success by using asterisk to connect to the OBiApps as well. I can even dial in and out.

I'd be interested to know how you did this if you feel like posting the details, particularly if you did it on a Centos system with no desktop or GUI running.

Please see this thread

I wrote it mostly in English. It works with good sound quality.

I think it should work in most linux flavours.

ckleea, thank you.  I did an article on your instructions here and also added some additional information that may help CentOS users that do not care to install the full Gnome desktop.  It uses twm instead, but since I didn't actually try it, I don't know if WINE and OBiAPP will run in that environment (I don't see why not, but as I said I have not tried it):

Another possible way to bridge Asterisk to the OBiTALK network

I do have a question - when reading your instructions am I supposed to be able to see any graphic images or screenshots?  The reason I ask is because I see gaps in the text where it looks like perhaps something should be inserted (starting at step 7) but all I see is a little extra white space, and I tried it in two different browsers.  There's also a line at the bottom with a lock icon next to it, and the text next to it reads:

附件: 您需要登錄才可以下載或查看附件。沒有帳號?註冊

Which I suspect might be telling visitors that they need to register to see any images (if so, I wonder why), but since the registration procedure seems to be in Chinese, that would be a bit difficult for those of us who only speak English.  If there are any images there, is there any way you could make them viewable by everyone who visits that forum?

Yes, you are right. Some of the missing bits are screen capture showing one how to do and the result screen.

For x-windows support in Centos, I don't know if plain x-windows will do. I do install Gnome to handle wine. VNC is used to check if this is working. Most Gnome/x-windows application/ resources are of no use.

This is also my reason to ask for a simple command linux version of obiapps. It just acts as a proxy. Once it is ready, we can remove the graphics support in centos and significantly reduce the server size.

Did you register at tele-cafe forum. I/We have put up many tricks and workaround for asterisk and OBi device for our Chinese/Hong Kong users.

Yes, that would be the best solution.  But right now I don't know if anyone at Obihai is seriously considering this request.

No, because I only speak English, not Chinese, and even the prompts to register were in Chinese, so I didn't know what information was supposed to go where.  I suppose I could run the page through Google translate and see if that would allow me to register.

EDIT:  Unfortunately that didn't work — I was able to figure out the first page of registration information but then there is a second page that has a field labeled 註冊原因: and I have no idea what it is asking for, and it won't let me proceed without putting something in there.

I can write mostly in English but write in Chinese is to share with my friends here in Hong Kong. I am sure we can improve the access so that users from other countries can read most.

The installation in my tutorial use a plain asterisk on Centos 5.5 32 bit server.

I do put up two more tutorials in the same forum on
1. using a USB 3G modem with asterisk
2. simple VOIP fax solution with asterisk

An updated instruction is put up in the same thread

http://www.telecom-cafe.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=3579&extra=page%3D1

It removes the need of vnc and gnome

Hi everyone!

I have it running on my Mac OS (10.7) machine using Wine for the ObiAPP. It works really well and is pretty easy - no command-line, just a few extra steps than the PC install. I wanted to post this here so that others could try it.

To Download:
- ObiAPP for PC
- X-Lite-4 for Mac (http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-4-for-mac-download.html)
- wine (I used winebottler (http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/) -- no need to do any extra work)

Step 1: Launch WineBottler, and Wine as well.
Step 2: Create Custom Prefix, for source file use OBiAPPsetup.exe); Name the 'Prefix' the name you want your ported ObiApp to have
Step 3: Go through the install process; I deselected launch program so that Wine knows that it's finished installing
Step 4: Launch ObiAPP (You'll find it where you saved it in step 2)
(you're done -- now you just do the same thing as Obi tells you to do)
Step 5: Sign in (If you don't see where, there should be a small window from where you can right click for the missing (if at all) windows)
Step 6: Install X-Lite-4, configure using the same process as the guide from Obi (you need to go to preferences of the app to put in the right settings)

You'll need to have wine running, unfortunately, possibly this could be circumvented by using the 'include wine binaries' option.

You wouldn't need to use Wine or OBiAPP if you use this configuration:

Single-Stage Dialing Through Any OBi Trunk Using SIP

A SIP client can communicate with the OBi directly.

RonR,

Interesting! So basically, this way, one can 'call' the obi directly, without using the ObiTalk network at all? If so, that's really direct and simple (once it's set up). However, my fear is that it's difficult to know what IP address the Obi has. How do you find out?

If the OBi is on a separate network from the SIP client and has a dynamic IP address, it's a simple matter to use a free DynDNS.org account to give a hostname to your dynamic IP address.
