Title: OBi200 + Google Voice hogging internet bandwidth
Post by: fomaan on October 20, 2017, 09:43:38 PM
Hello,

Bought OBi200 a week back and connected it with google voice. From that point, our internet is pretty slow. To make sure it is OBi200, removed it for few days and internet is fine now. Clearly, it is OBi200 which is hogging the bandwidth. Do I need to change any setting to fix it? With this bandwidth hog it is not of much use.

I have 40MBPS connection, OBi200 is connected to wireless router and router is connected to modem.

Thanks,
Rajeev

40 mbps is likely your download.  What is your upload speed?  Even if it's very slow, I can't see how it would have a significant effect.  During a phone call, it's only 10KB/s in each direction which is practically nothing.

Here's some bw statistics on our usage, also with google voice as the provider.

Last 30 days - 1.5 GB
Last 21 days - 1.0 GB
Last 14 days - 740 MB
last 7 days - 272 MB
Last 2 days - 50 MB

On the average it would seem to use ~20KB/s of bandwidth for both channels of the call.  A minute call would use 1.2MB of data, 30 minute call = 36 MB, and an hour call would use 72MB.  So keeping this in mind, the 1.5GB figure above equates to ~1250 minutes.

Define what you mean by your internet being slow.  What specifically are you using to gauge this?

It would be interesting to see what your real time bw usage is while the obi is connected.  Many routers provide some info on this.

Google Voice's total bandwidth utilization is under 100Kbits/s per direction (so, double that for a full-duplex conversation), not KBytes/s.

G7.11 CODEC utilization is about 64Kbps, plus about 31Kbps of network overhead.  It can't possibly account for "hogging" an internet connection, unless your "40KBPS" is a typo or misunderstanding of your ISP's provided service level.   For example, even a slow, 768Kbps DSL circuit wouldn't be swamped by a call.

Steve, my 10KB/s number above is realtime direct from my firewall during an active phone call on the obi200.  Not sure where you see 100KBytes/s.

Even if the OP had obitalk enabled, I can't imagine overhead being that high to slow down the entire pipe.

@GPz1100
I am not seeing where you are seeing SteveInWA saying he is seeing 100 kbyte/s.
