Title: Turning off voicemail in Google Voice
Post by: Listen_Lynda on May 31, 2020, 12:53:43 PM
Has anyone found a way to turn off voicemail recording within Google Voice? When I receive calls I would prefer the phone I have connected to the Obi200 to ring until I answer, and never forward to VM if I do not answer.

Not possible.  That is by intentional design.  The only way to get what you ask for is to use a different VoIP service provider.

DrGeoff, what would the Intention of that design be? Why would they require that the VMail be active?

I'm flattered that you think my guess would be better than yours.

Google Voice's voicemail function is deeply integrated into the design of the service.  If it was disabled, it would cause problems with its simultaneous ring function and the ability of linked phone numbers to forward unanswered or busy calls back to Google Voice's voicemail.  Google Voice allows calls to be placed and answered on an OBiTALK device, but that is not the primary purpose of the service.

Google Voice is not a bare-bones SIP VoIP trunk provider.  If that's all you want, then use a different service provider.

I'm sure I'll be criticized for this suggestion. I think GV transfers calls to VM after the 5th ring. What you need to do is after 4 rings forward the inbound call somewhere that will answer the call then transfer the call back to your OBi to continue ringing your phone. GV will not send answered calls to VM.

Callcentric has a free IP Freedom account that has an IVR function. Register your OBi to your Callcentric account. Route calls to your Callcentric account after 4 rings (the OBi has this function). Define a Callcentric Call Treatment to transfer all calls to the IVR. The IVR will route the call back to your OBi.

I did some very basic testing. I defined an IVR:
IVR Name: BypassVM
Timeout: 1 Second
Announcement: "We are redirecting your call"
Did not define any key presses
Last Route: Single Forward
Send to: My extension

I called Callcentric directly, not GV.
I heard the IVR message then my extension started ringing.
I'm assuming this will stop GV sending the call to VM.

Edit:
If you're interested, I'll do additional testing to make sure this will work correctly. I'll also be available to help with the setup.

Are you talking about using CallForwardOnNoAnswerNumber? If so, what value are you using for the "Directory number" to route it to Callcentric?

Assuming SP4 is defined as non-GV SIP.
CallForwardOnNoAnswerNumber: sp4(1777xxxxxxx@in.callcentric.com;ui=$1)
