Title: Line out VS Phone
Post by: YellowFly on March 06, 2012, 03:43:58 PM
Hi,
My question is regarding the Line out on the OBi110.  I guess I must be missing something... or mine is defective.  Isn't the only thing I need to do is plug the supplied phone cable into a wall phone jack and the other end into the OBI line jack and it should distribute the VOIP service throughout my home... Because it doesn't... it doesn't do anything.  If I plug the cord into the jack on the OBI labeled as phone and then into a wall jack, then it does provide phone service to all of my jacks... can someone please tell me what the Line jack is for?  And yes I have totally disconnected my home from the phone company (cut the wire outside).  Is mine defective...

Thanks!

The line jack is for an incoming POTS line (or equivalent) so that calls coming in on it can also be received to the phone port of the Obi. And the Obi can also route the incoming calls on the POTS line just like those configured on the SP services.

""If I plug the cord into the jack on the OBI labeled as phone and then into a wall jack, then it does provide phone service to all of my jacks...""

It does not work in my case! It ONLY work when I connected the cord into the jack on the OBI labeled as phone and then into a jack of a phone !!! Does that mean my home's wiring is bad!! Please advice...Thanks

Only if you can confirm that the wiring worked correctly before.

Hi,

That is correct.  You're not attempting to use the LINE jack in the way it was intended.  Assuming you have CORRECTLY disconnected your inside phone wiring from the telephone company's lines (see How to Distribute VoIP Throughout a Home (http://voip.mi-telecom.org/)), then to get your OBi110 to feed your inside wiring you need to connect your PHONE jack to your inside wiring, not the LINE jack.  BUT DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOUR INSIDE WIRING IS COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED FROM THE PHONE COMPANY'S LINES, or you could destroy your OBi110.

The LINE jack is only used if you are still getting service from the phone company, or from another VoIP provider that requires you to use a VoIP adapter they provide, or you use another device that simulates a phone line and provides dial tone (such as a device that lets you use a regular phone with your cell phone service).  You can then feed that phone service, or the output of that device into the LINE jack of your OBi110, and connect your phone(s) to the phone jack and if a call comes in on either the line connected to the LINE jack or the VoIP/Google Voice service you have the OBi110 registered with, it will ring the connected phone(s).  But connecting the LINE jack to a dead phone line accomplishes absolutely nothing.

The rule is, if a line has voltage and/or dial tone on it, it goes to the LINE jack.  If a line is totally dead (completely disconnected from the phone company's lines) and you have only phones connected to it, then and only then can you connect it to the PHONE port.

Yes, the phone jack, that I plug the cord into, is working before when I have DSL service. I used this phone jack for DSL internet, so I know it should works! May be the OBi setup problem??

Update: Today, I checked the wall wiring continuity, the 2 connections are good between my dining room and bedroom. There are 4 wires inside the phone cable, my phone uses 2 middle wires (#2,3) and they have been checked good. So the problem definitely in the OBi setup! I want to use the wall phone jack and the OBi phone port but no luck, no tone in other room!!!! Please HELP!!!   Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone ,I just bought a OBI 110 ATA device and this is my first post  .
I had it (obi110)set up to use GV(googlevoice) now I need a FWT(fixed wireless telephone)with a sim card connected thru line port. FWT has a  FXS  capable port.
I want to be able to call my gv number and access the sim card in FWT thru OBI portal to make another call or simply receive the gv call thru FWT .
I also want to be able to call sim card in FWT to make a call thru OBI110 portal .

In a second scenario: I need to be able to connect a second FWT2 thru phone port of OBI110 to call FWT 1 and make another call.
I would greatly appreciated if anyone can guide me thru this set up
Regards
  ;)

You can access the OBi LINE Port directly from the OBi PHONE Port by dialing a single #.  You should hear dialtone from the FWT at that point.

If the FWT interface behaves like a normal PSTN line, you should also be able to dial out the OBi LINE Port by prefixing the number with **8.

The OBi PHONE Port is an FXS port.  You cannot connect one device's FXS port to another device's FXS port.

thanks RonR ,I followed your advise and it works as predicted: dialing single # gives you a dialtone from FWT
dialing out also works**8, BUT when the other party answers he cannot hear me,also when a call is made to the FWT it does NOT ring the phone connected to OBI phone port.
Maybe not related but GV ringing but when pick up cant hear either.
cheers
