Title: Setting up Obi110 for use with HK PSTN
Post by: Kaizer on August 01, 2012, 03:54:01 PM
I sent an Obi110 to a friend in HK (calling it ObiHK). Prior to sending, I updated the PHONE to use PSTN as Primaryline and LINE with the following:

Ring Dection settings specifically for HK Telco Standards:

Physical Interface --> LINE port --> Ring Detection

Ring Frequency Min: 10
Ring Frequency Max: 100
Ring Validation Time: 256 ms
Ring Indication Delay: 512 ms  ( same to default )
Ring Timeout: 640 ms
Ring Threshold: 13.5-16.5 Vrms
Ringer Impedance: High (Normal)  ( same to default )

PCCW is their landline carrier.

After connecting the Obi to their network, connecting a phone and LINE port, the lights on Obi corresponding to Internet, Phone and Line are solid green. Call quality from ObiHK to other Obi's and one stage calling to other Obi's via their respective PSTN is very clear. However using the Phone connected to ObiHK to dial a local HK number, I'm told there is a lot of static, choppiness. One stage dialing from my US Obi to ObiHK does not work. When I dial into ObiHK's AA and press # to test the PSTN, there is no tone. It appears ObiHK is not detecting PCCW? Please help. Thank you.

Since you set PSTN as primary line, after dialing into the ObiHK's AA what happens when you press "2" to make a new call? Can you make the new call?

You may want to read up on the media loopback feature of the OBi. It is designed for trouble shooting far away OBi's. It echos the far away OBi.

This is the standard thing to try with network related and call quality issues (YMMV):

After pushing 2 and dialing a local 8 digit phone number #, it just disconnects after a brief moment. I read that I can test the local dial tone by select 2 from AA and then just pressing #. There is no dial tone.

My friend experiences static when using the phone connected to the Obi to dial local numbers (via the PSTN). There is no issue with when making Obi to Obi calls so not network related problems? I'm assuming the Obi is not detecting/working properly with the local PSTN?

Part of the problem solved. It appears the phone line supplied with Obi is defective. Switched out with a local phone line and there is no static when using PSTN to make local calls.

Here are a couple of problems:

1)

When the phone connected to the Obi is picked up (PSTN is set as the primaryline) there is no dialtone. One must press END (hangup) on the phone to get a dialtone. Then proceed to dial a local 8 digit phone number. Thus after select 2 after AA picks up and press # I do not get the dial tone from the PSTN.

2)

When calling from ObiUS to ObiHK, the ObiHK AA picks up. If I select 1 to continue this call, I just get disconnected. Does that mean the phone to the Obi is not connected?

Problem #2 fixed with a change to line port impedance to 370+(620||310nF)
