Title: Help - how do I set up a fax machine
Post by: forumname on September 21, 2013, 06:39:22 PM
Hello,

I have an Obi 202 working with GV and the Anveo 911 service.   I need to be able to send and receive faxes.  Ideally, I would love to do this from both my computer (W8) and fax (Brother MFC-J630v), but I am OK if it just works with the fax.

I am assuming I need to do these things to get just the fax working.

1.  Get another GV account for the fax number
2.  Get a service for Callcentric....I think it is the pay as you go service
3.  Connect a regular phone line to the back of the Obi and put the other end in the jack on the wall
4.  In the room with the fax, connect a phone cord from the wall to the fax

Below is my current setup.   I am assuming I need to connect CallCentric to one of the open service ports  and the new GV account to the other.  What I am not sure is which of these should be listed under phone 2 for Phone Port Configuration Summary.   I am also not sure if there is anything else I would need to do.

Thanks,

J

Fax might work fine for you with just GV. Some people do better by setting the fax machine to use a slower bit rate, and some find that the machine automatically picks something that works. It worked during my one and only test sending a fax from my Brother MFC7440n.

Looking at the menu of my fax machine, I can choose
2.Fax> 0.Miscellaneous > 1.Compatibility > Basic(for VoIP

The explanation says "VoIP service providers offer fax support using various standards. If you regularly experience fax transmission errors, choose Basic(for VoIP". I had not made that choice before my successful test, but I have now.

Here are some links that a search turns up... the last link is a search.

I read somewhere that the only reliable faxing over the internet required T38 and that GV used G777.  From what I have read, GV will work some of the time.   I am not sure why this matters, but it seems to be important.

also if you only fax occasionally (and not concerned with any possible privacy issues)
there are a few free internet fax providers
(usually limited by a specific amount of pages you can send at one time or per day)

It's G711 that GV uses, but your concept holds.

The T38 would be more reliable at higher speeds.

Ok, so T38 is needed for higher speeds which I am guessing my high speed cable connection qualifies for (or does the speed refer to the backend?).   Assuming this is true, what additional steps do I need to set this up (see first post)?

Thanks,

J

The speed of your internet connection is irrelevant.  Slowing the fax machine will likely work fine.  I've been faxing for nearly two years just fine.

Rick - what speed do you use?

9600

That's what I have on my Brother MFC-665CW.  I set it to 9600 with no error correction.  Works fine with GV.
