Title: I want Google Voice to "Follow Me".
Post by: chmedly on October 27, 2013, 08:17:24 PM
I did some searching on this but haven't found what I'm looking for so I thought I would bring it up in my own thread.  I use GV as my main number and it serves as my personal and work number for my small business.  I split my time pretty evening between 2 locations and "the field".  I have an OBi box at both locations.  Since the Google Chat can only be enabled on one device (and receive calls) I'm looking for a way to easily (perhaps automated) switch the chat on and off in the OBi boxes at my two locations.  I do sometimes use a mobile computer as a phone too when I'm out and about which means that there are 3 locations so to speak that I want to switch between.  I read about the ability to pick up the phone and key in a code that enables or disables the voice provider but that doesn't sound fool proof as I would have to remember to do that every time I arrive or leave one of my locations.  I have 2 wishes.
1) Buttons on the "OBITALK: My OBi Endpoints" page that toggles GV on or off for a given device.  I think I could remember that better than picking up a handset although I'm not sure. If I forget to code out on a handset then I have to go to the OBi dashboard anyway to log out from the previous location manually so just going there in the first place might make sense.
2)  A way to automate it based on where my android phone is.  I've heard of people automating various things this way.  One approach is to have a wifi router at each location that watches for the phone's mac address to connect or disconnect from the router which triggers an appropriate command.  Another option could be based on google location data (formerly known as Latitude) although I don't know how to access that data for these types of purposes.  Perhaps the best option could be an extension to or entirely new OBi app on the phone that listens for a connection to a certain network and then triggers my desired change in the OBi Dashboard.

But perhaps there are other options for this?  If GV numbers could be forwarded to each other then this would't be an issue....

Any thoughts?

See the following thread:

I'm biased, but I think reply 11 is the best idea.

For your requirement you would fork the call from each OBi to the local phone port, the other OBi and the mobile phone.

See Shale's reply 10 in the same thread. If you have 2 OBi20Xs both can be configured to receive calls, then you would only fork the inbound call to the mobile.

There's an iPhone app that will do what you're asking -- SmarterVoice.

I would set up a calcentric account and forward the calls to it.  Add your Google Voice and Callcentric accounts to both Obi boxes.  Multiple device can connect to Callcentric at the same time using extensions.  Have Google voice forward to the Callcentric number but not forward to Google Talk.  All incoming and outgoing calls should work seamlessly.  As for your phone add that as a forwarding phone as well.
