Hi:
Thinking of going with OBI200 and Google Voice, but am a little concerned about making the plunge.

I already have a google voice number, BUT....it's not the number I want to use with the OBI.   I want to use my existing landline number with the OBI.  BUT - I don't want to port my landline until I've tested out the OBI/Google voice setup.

So, can I get the OBI200 - have it use my CURRENT GOOGLE VOICE, and then if everything seems great, change the number the OBI200 uses?

I understand I'll have to port my landline number to a cell, and then the cell to the OBI....but do I have to buy ANOTHER OBI, or can I have a single OBI eventually use a different number?

Thanks.  Hope this all made sense.

You cannot port a number to the OBi. You port a number to a Service Provider, in your case Google Voice.

An OBi200 can have up to 4 GV or SIP accounts in any mix of the two types. Nothing to stop you keeping your current GV number and porting the desired number to a new GV account.

Be aware that not all numbers are portable to GV. There is a checker at https://www.google.com/voice/b/0/porting. Advisable to check that first if you have not already.

Thank you for the information.

So, I can buy the OBI, attach to my CURRENT GV and if all is well, do the landline to cellphone to GV and use the OBI for that.

perfect!

Thanks again.

You will have to port your LAN line to prepaid wireless carrier then port your number to google voice because currently google voice only port wireless number here is the link below

First let me say that I have GoogleVoice numbers and use them. With that said...

Is there specific reasons you want a GV number? Perhaps for the way they handle calls or because it is free? Those are great reasons, but here is my take on it. To port in a landline number, as Highgrade mentioned, is a multi-step process, sometimes with problems. There is also a cost to port.

You could port the number for free to Voip.Ms and fund that account with $25. Although you would pay for calls and them hosting that number each month costs a bit of money, I'm betting that $25 would last you many, many months.

Obis are great to access GoogleVoice numbers, but as I say, there are issues that may crop up that make the process less than easy. One is that if you don't answer the call or have an answering machine pick up fast enough, the call WILL go to Google voicemail. Some people like that function and some do all they can to avoid it.

There are other Voip services also that may or may not do what you want for a reasonable or free cost. So look at all options and decide which service works best for you. Perhaps it is GoogleVoice after all.
