I bought 2 OBI200's from Amazon in December.

"In Stock. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Gift-wrap available."

Opened the box today and installed at a friends house. On Obi dashboard it shows update available but when I click on the triangle it takes me to the download page.

I check the warranty tab and lo and behold...

Hardware Warranty and Premium Technical Support
Start Date Apr 2015
End Date   Apr 2016
Status Expired

No wonder the sale :-)

I guess it will be manual updates for these boxes.

Were both units out of warranty or only one?

I assume that it is the first registration of a device on the portal that sets the start date of the warranty period.  If that is a correct assumption it leads to an obvious conclusion!

Even if my assumption is not correct, there is still a question to be answered.

I purchased an OBI200 from a different online vendor back in June 2016 and did not open the sealed box until January 2017 when the device was also installed and registered on the portal, the warranty tab shows warranty start date of January 2017. This confirms what drgeoff said about when warranty starts.

I have not opened the second unit yet.

In all the units I have purchased (perhaps 10 or more) I have only had reason to contact Obi once and I think they fixed the issue remotely.

I will send Obihai a request as to why this unit has no current warranty. I wanted to test the ObiExtras on this one.

I can also confirm from direct experience that the warranty clock does not start ticking until the device is first registered with OBitalk.  Looks like you got a return.  Did the box look new?  I just checked one of my never-activated on-the-shelf OBi200 boxes and it has a circular piece of clear tape sealing the box shut.  Did yours come with the tape intact on the cardboard box your unit came in?
