Hoping SteveinWA will chime in here.   I am assisting a family member in advising them about the new OBi/GV update & the forthcoming firmware update.  This person is opposed to the firmware update at this time and has gone in & disabled firmware updates on their device.  I advised them against it.  Could someone please give me a good explanation as to why firmware updates should *not* be disabled at this time.  Of course, the obvious reason is that ultimately their device will cease operating, but this person wants more of an explanation.  I just need another person to state that they shouldn't do this, if in fact this is the case.  Thanks in advance for your help.  I appreciate all the assistance so many of you have provided in the past.

So they are savvy enough to disable updates but cannot figure out why a big G-Voice update is important?

Google Voice is switching to a higher quality, lower data codec and is gaining some features like Caller ID lookups for some Businesses. Plus *maybe* even more features down the line too.

After June 18th if not updated the device will cease to work.

General improvements really. See here: https://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=13824.0

Thanks so much Crow550 for your reply.  Yes, they realize that their device will cease to work after June 18th.  I think they are wanting to delay the firmware update.  They have heard that there are some issues after the firmware update & perhaps want to wait a few weeks until something more stable is released.

I admit that I am not that savvy when it comes to the OBi devices.  I rely heavily upon the counsel from the experts on this forum.  My fear is that if firmware updates are disabled for the OBi device, that Google Voice may go ahead & update something on Google's end ... then, if firmware updates are disabled on the OBi device, there could be issues.  I just don't know enough technically about this update to advise my family member further.

Just to clarify, do they use Google Voice?  If no, there is no need to update.

They are crushing bugs now but unless anything else comes up it should be rolled out to all on Friday: https://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=9983.msg89227#msg89227

However it doesn't hurt to wait. If they wanna wait till June 18th they can.

Or the 18th of May if they want these new features sooner as it should be bug free by then....
