Is now a bad time to start using this product and GV?

Hi,

I'm working on cord-cutting for my Mom. I have my obihai 200, and I'm all set to port her number over to Tracfone (and then GV), but...

The amount of support tickets that I see is a little disconcerting. Is the new version of GV messing things up with Obihai?

Will it be an easy task to port her landline number over and get this working, and if I succeed, will it be reliable for the foreseeable future?

I never recommend that people set up Google Voice for their parents, especially if their parents are elderly and/or living alone.  Speaking as a baby boomer myself, and as someone with experience living with elderly seniors, when essential things don't work as they should, it causes stress, frustration, fear and anxiety.  The ability to work with someone over the phone to troubleshoot problems lessens.  Also keep in mind, Google Voice, by itself, cannot call 911, and it requires provisioning a separate 911 service for the OBiTALK device.

So, that, plus some of the recent issues caused by this year's major changes to the service, makes it a poor solution.

A better approach is to just port your mom's land line number to a mobile phone carrier with an unlimited talk/text plan.  Those plans are usually a lot cheaper than the land line service being eliminated.  There's no need to pay for a plan with lots of data.

I'm having trouble with the E911 too. I signed up with GV911 and got a message to try again later. I forgot all about it and today tried to sign up at Anveo. I didn't use the link from the Obi dashboard and there was no provision on Anveo's website for E911 only. I filled out the "get started" to try to find the E911 signup and was apparently signed up for a free Anveo account which I understand charges for outbound calls? I tried to sign up for E911 and it said to try again later. I just used the link from the dashboard to try and sign up that way and it says "address not found". I checked on GV911 and it says I have an account, but I have never given my PayPal account to them or been charged any money. Meanwhile, my phone works fine inbound and outbound, which I'm reading it shouldn't without an E911 account. I am totally confused. I get nothing when I dial 933 either.

I use GoogleVoice with my Obi.

However, it seems that most of the problems on the forum here are related to GV.

Most people have little or no problems using a paid VOIP service like CallCentric or Voip.MS, etc.
