Google charging for outbound calls to US?

For the past few months, when I try to make a call to a US number, it states that the call will be charged $.01 per minute. Any idea why this is occurring? If I place a call from my desk (browser) or phone I do not get this message nor incur a charge.

I understand that, but the charge is for ALL calls. My wife gets this message just to call my office in downtown Nashville.

I'm thinking perhaps there is a setting I changed and didn't realize the impact. Stumped.

You can enter any phone number and check its per-minute rate, here:

Yes, I see charges for local calls. But I still do not know for certain why.

Did you look up the number(s) that you were calling?  The tool should return a per-minute cost.  If it says it's a free call, but you were charged, that's a bug. But, if it says the call is billable at one cent per minute, then that's because the carrier that hosts that number is charging excessive intercarrier connection rates.

No, the URL cited takes me to billing history, no place to proactively check a number.

Besides, I do not and have not yet been charged when I initiate a call from Google Voice on my phone or from the GV web page (connecting with phone). Why would there be a difference from using GV from Obi202 and from a web page?

Still just billing history. That's the same link as before.

I am willing to provide some evidence, but I have no idea what you are looking for.

I can give an example. On January 9, my wife called the pediatrician's office - a local call - ‪(615) 773-7277‬. The call lasted 4:23 and we were charged $.05.

The link I provided goes directly to the old, "Legacy" Google Voice website's billing tab.  If your browser doesn't go there, it's likely a cached data or cookie issue.  You could get there indirectly by starting on the new Google Voice website, (https://voice.google.com/u/0/calls), clicking the three horizontal bar "hamburger" menu icon, then scrolling down and clicking "Legacy Google Voice".  Note:  if this is a G Suite account, you will not have access to the Legacy website, since the new G Suite version of Google Voice doesn't use it.

The number you posted is provisioned with a high-rate "Competitive" Local Exchange Carrier, and it is, indeed, one cent per minute to call that carrier' numbers.  See the attached screenshot.

It wasn't obvious how to find the info in the legacy site, but when I switched and clicked on the link above it redirected to https://www.google.com/voice/b/0#billing.
That's the billing tab of the legacy site settings.

Infuriating where the telephone infrastructure has gone in the past ten years. I think I need to have my SO focus on how much we are saving net vs. cable or even a 3rd party SIP provider.

All you can do is to complain to the carrier that is charging those high inter-carrier connect fees.
