Turning off voicemail in Google Voice

Listen_Lynda:
Has anyone found a way to turn off voicemail recording within Google Voice? When I receive calls I would prefer the phone I have connected to the Obi200 to ring until I answer, and never forward to VM if I do not answer.

drgeoff:
Not possible.  That is by intentional design.  The only way to get what you ask for is to use a different VoIP service provider.

Listen_Lynda:
DrGeoff, what would the Intention of that design be? Why would they require that the VMail be active?

I'm flattered that you think my guess would be better than yours.

SteveInWA:
Google Voice's voicemail function is deeply integrated into the design of the service.  If it was disabled, it would cause problems with its simultaneous ring function and the ability of linked phone numbers to forward unanswered or busy calls back to Google Voice's voicemail.  Google Voice allows calls to be placed and answered on an OBiTALK device, but that is not the primary purpose of the service.

Google Voice is not a bare-bones SIP VoIP trunk provider.  If that's all you want, then use a different service provider.
