Using OBi and GV Outside the USA
JeanObiUser:
I have a question I am hoping someone can help me with. I'll be overseas in a few weeks. I'll be taking my Obi which is configured to use Google Voice to make calls. I plan to connect both the ethernet and local phone port line to the Obi. Since the local phone port is connected, when I call a local phone number (local to that country) on the phone will is make the call using the local phone port line and not the ethernet connection? And when I make a call to the usa will the Obi know to make the call using the ethernet collection and not the local phone port line?
I want to know how the Obi will know or differentiate between the two types of calls. How will it know when to use the internet cat5 cable to make the call and when to use the phone port? I guess this question is also applicable in the usa when I have both the ethernet connected and the phone port line connected as well.
How can you specific which method to use to make the out going call? Thanks in advance.

If this is a temporary change, you can press **8 before dialing the local number. This will send the call on the land line. Since the Obi is already set up to use google voice as default that will not change, you can dial as you normally have.
Also, pressing # on the phone will connect you directly to the land line's dial tone and you can dial local.

Thanks Jimates for the reply. That was very helpful. Is there a way to make it the opposite. Letting the land line port be the default line dialed through (without needing to dial "**8" or "#" first) and the google voice ethernet line needing # to activate its dial tone? I hope that was clear.
Also how do I become a Obi beta user like yourself ? Sounds intriguing. thanks in advance.

Physical Interfaces -> Phone -> PHONE Port -> Primary Line = PSTN (un-check the Obitalk Settings box & check the default box)
This will send all direct dialed calls out the line.
To use the SP services, pre-pend **1 for SP1 or **2 SP2 service.
If you want an automatic setup where the proper service is used based on the digits you dial, without pre-pending anything, you can change the phone port outbound call route. With the correct call route you would just change the default outgoing line when moving from the US, and visa versa when coming back.
RonR speaks both digitmap and callroute. I haven't taken the initiative to really learn it because he does such a great job with it.
(I have so much knowledge now that I am not using, why learn something else I won't use.)
