Alarm Systems and VoIP (Google Voice and SIP Services) - Use InBand DTMF
pfranks:
can anyone explain the advantages of using "Inband" over the default setting? I have used voip-based security systems with the default settings for 2 years in 2 different homes -without problems i am aware of--- ---according the web pages for both security systems both are working properly, and from time to time I get calls from the companies consistent with the systems working (when problems arise).
If I do switch to inband--- how can I tell if the VOIP provider supports it?
Will there be any disadvantages for routine calls if i do switch?

Ask them! Seriously I'm not being sarcastic just ask your VoIP provider what DTMF method they support. Voipfone here in the UK for example support RFC2833 but if I was to select InBand when accessing Voicemail pressing "1" for new messages wouldn't work.
If your unable to get an answer out of your VoIP provider then maybe it's time to change because that is a basic need to know question and they should be able to answer it. Failing that trial and error!

What DTMF setting are you using and who is your ITSP?

Thank you for posting this information - it was exactly what I needed to get my alarm system to work over Google Voice and Comcast high speed internet. It is very easy to see that it works. You can just bypass a zone and look at the Google Voice call history. You can see that the alarm system makes only one call to the alarm monitoring number rather than the 8 failed attempts it made before. You can use the call history to see how reliable the connection is. I cannot believe how prone to putting out FUD people in the alarm industry can be, as evidenced by some other replies.

You missed a step - checking with your alarm company to ensure that they received everything properly, including type of alarm and zone triggered, just like they would normally.
IMHO, you've got to be crazy to rely upon GV to be reliable in an alarm situation, coupled with internet outages. I switched to cellular which is much more reliable.
