If port to GV fails - where is cheapest place to port number and use as DID

My friend lives in an area where he pretty certain that even if he ports his land line to a throwaway phone, he feels GV will have trouble porting it - which seems a bit paranoid - but we have seen people not being able to port to GV even though they ported to the recommended burner phone.

So a couple questions - if the number ports to the AT&T throwaway phone, hasn't he eliminated the redneck telephone company that he originally had his number with - so really why would GV have a problem porting it from AT&T - or are there still anomalies?

The main question I have is - I see companies like voip.ms he could port his number too, then configure the OBI for that DID.  Many of these companies charge like $1.95 a month (or $4.95 flat rate month) then .01 cents a minute for incoming  calls - does anyone know of any better deals for him to park his number at?  He is only trying to catch calls to his old number, he's quite ok giving out his GV number to people and people start using GV for incoming calls.

For $2.80 per month, you can have unlimited incoming calls, and you get 911 service (that is the $0.80). Calls out are 1 cent to the US per minute, and half that to Canada, surprisingly. If you select to prepay for a year, they offer free porting.

After the year you could downgrade to a dollar per month cheaper. Then 40 minutes free incoming per day and pay for calls after that.

If you set the OBi up to to default to sending calls out to GV, there would not be outgoing charges.

I like their call filtering options. I like not getting robocalls, so I have set things up that way.

If you choose to have incoming caller ID name in addition to the free number, there is a charge of 0.9 cents per call for people not in your Contacts list.

And, your friend can always try this: Find a number belonging to a T-Mobile (or any of the cell providers GV allows transfers from), plug the number in here and see if it will port.  In case you didn't see this, the process landline to GV/Obi proces is outlined here.

I believe voip.ms is doing ports for free until 5/15. The monthly charge for that DID should be $1.50 on top of the time charges. They charge a buck/month only if you choose a DID from their list.

You can port to Localphone, it's $ 0.99 /month for an US DID but you pay $ 25 porting fees.

I got my first Obi about a year ago.  Now have 4 between me and my daughter.
I am reporting good connections in all 4 locations
  Thinking of porting my landline to either GV or Anveo.  
If port to GV is sucessfull, I can  fwd to callcentric and have caller ID.  all for free.
I know GV is not guaranteed forever and Anveo seems to be @$2.00 month for incoming DID.

If GV port doesn't work, then I will probably go with Anveo as they have free porting right now

any thoughts?

btw, there is a small amt of satisfaction, every time a junk call comes in, and I add it to Callcentrics call treatment page

GV lets you add fwd 2 GV #'s to the same landline such as (Callcentric)
you can also fwd 2 GV #'s to a free IPKALL # which can go to Callcentric
and I suppose you could fwd a third GV to a single # by using the temporary FWD method?

I would really like Obi to make a "210" aka a 202 with a line port for a landline, as I can get a landline for <$10 for a backup.I want the ability to make two calls at once with a landline interface.
