Someone texted me last night and my phones rang a very quick single ring.  I thought it was a call hang up from the other end, but I noticed today on my cordless phone's caller ID display part of a text message where caller's name should appear and the number in the correct area.

Why does this happen?  Is it a setting in GV or the Obi202 I need to change?  Not sure why this would ever default to plugged in phones that are obviously not used for texting, at least not the standard types I'm using.  I simply want only to get texts to my GV inbox, where it is also forwarded to my gmail.

For the text message to show up in Gmail Google Voice must be set to forward it to Gmail.  The phone ringing when you receive a text message is a feature of the Obi 202.  The setting to turn it off is X_SMSNotify.  It can be found under the service provider settings for your Google Voice account on the Obi.
