DNS issues?
(1/1)
Khelmar:
I'm trying to set up my Obi202 with my home network. I can't seem to get it to resolve any DNS addresses unless I plug it straight into the cable modem.
I enabled syslogging on the Obi, and this is what I see:
Code:
8/28/13 10:28:22.000 PM OBI[-1]: IP Address= 192.168.1.250
8/28/13 10:28:22.000 PM OBI[-1]: Gateway = 192.168.1.254
8/28/13 10:28:22.000 PM OBI[-1]: Netmask = 255.255.255.0
8/28/13 10:28:27.000 PM OBI[-1]: SYSTEM REBOOTED (Reason: 4, lifecycle: 309)
...
8/28/13 10:28:34.000 PM OBI[-1]: BASE:resolving pool.ntp.org
8/28/13 10:28:34.000 PM OBI[-1]: SNTP->pool.ntp.org
8/28/13 10:28:34.000 PM OBI[-1]: BASE:resolving root.pnn.obihai.com
8/28/13 10:28:36.000 PM OBI[-1]: SNTP->pool.ntp.org
8/28/13 10:28:38.000 PM OBI[-1]: [CPT] --- FXS s/w tone generator (sit_1) ---
8/28/13 10:28:40.000 PM OBI[-1]: SNTP->pool.ntp.org
8/28/13 10:28:43.000 PM OBI[-1]: [CPT] --- FXS s/w tone generator (confirm) ---
8/28/13 10:28:43.000 PM OBI[-1]: [CPT] tone compression done - 11561 !!
8/28/13 10:28:48.000 PM OBI[-1]: SNTP->pool.ntp.org
8/28/13 10:28:52.000 PM OBI[-1]: BASE:resolving root.pnn.obihai.com
The BASE:resolving root.pnn.obihai.com is repeated endlessly.
I've tried adding public DNS servers to the Obi's configuration page, including 8.8.8.8 (Google) and my University's DNS server, with no luck.
Is there anything else I can try to get this to work?
QBZappy:
Khelmar,
Welcome
A quick way that might help you get around this issue is to try it with another router.
Khelmar:
I've tried it straight into the cable modem, and I know that it works that way. I'm hoping to get some suggestions for what I can try to get it to work with my current firewall setup, as I can't find a router that has all the capabilities of pfSense (RADIUS server, etc.).
I just can't understand why it's not resolving DNS lookups, since that doesn't seem to be a firewall issue - all the other devices on the network aren't having an issue with it.
QBZappy:
I'm using Tomato firmware on my router. This works for me.
1) Have you tried using your pfSense router ip as the DNS address in the OBi?
2) Does your DNS Server on the router have this setting "Intercept DNS port (UDP 53)" If so try enabling it.
Can you ping from your computer connected to pfSense 'root.pnn.obihai.com'?

Khelmar:
1. I have tried using pfSense as the DNS - no luck. I've even added root.pnn.obihai.com's IP to the DNS forwarder page so that pfSense serves it directly instead of forwarding it to the DNS servers, with no luck. Nslookup gets the IP address without a problem.
2. It doesn't have that setting, but I can try and set an explicit firewall rule allowing port 53.
3. I can ping root.pnn.obihai.com with no problems.
