FWIW in case it may give clues or assistance to someone else:

After eliminating many of the possible causes of this issue, I decided to switch the ethernet
port that the obi is connected to: I'm using an 8-port 10/100BT switch as a dumb-hub.
Somehow after the switch over it "feels" like things improved a lot.

 I cannot confirm 100% that this was the source of the issues
(ie bad ethernet port on the hub or bad hub altogether),
but for sure the intensity and frequency of the spousal complains about the phone service have
subsided a lot since I made the change.
