Connect OBi202 to ObiLine to a Wireless Home Phone for Free 911 Service

Given that all wireless carriers in the United States are required to process 911 calls EVEN if the wireless phone was been disconnected, you may want to consider purchasing a Wireless Home Phone and NOT activating it, using it only for FREE 911 Service.

The advantages:

  • If the Internet is out, you could still make a 911 call (provided you have your OBi202 on a UPS)
  • No monthly recurring charges for 911

That said, what is the correct routing programing on an OBi202 to route 911 calls to the OBiLine without having to dial the ## prefix?[/list]

You misunderstand why people sign up for an e911 service. While you can call 911 from any unactivated cell phone, the 911 dispatcher won't receive the caller's home address, callback number and official location like a landline 911 service. This is in case you make the call and are unable to get to the point of letting the dispatcher know where you are. In a landline 911, the dispatcher will at least know the location of the call and attempt to call back or send an officer for a welfare check, etc. What a paid e911 service (for VoIP lines, etc.) does is to replicate the landline 911 and pass along those vital details.

An unregistered cell phone 911 call is good, assuming you are able to provide the dispatcher with all the details. However, if you are incapacitated (medically or otherwise) before providing those information, the dispatcher won't know exactly where you are.

You can program the local 911 number into your OBi's speed dial but it also won't transfer the exact location to the dispatcher unless you have an e911 service. I guess people are willing to pay for the e911 service as an insurance policy in the event they are unable to physically tell the dispatcher where they are (i.e., children calling 911 for help, etc.).

(Mli1) = (...|911|...)  ;LI1 LINE digit map.

(Mphn) n=1,2 = (...|(Mpli))  ;PHn PHONE Port digit map with (Mli1) embedded in (Mpli).

{Rphn} = ...,{(Mpli):pli}  ;PHn PHONE Port outbound call route.

OR

(Mphn) n=1,2 = (...|(Mli1)|...|(Mpli))  ;PHn PHONE Port digit map with (Mli1) NOT embedded in (Mpli).

{Rphn} = ...,{(Mli1):li1},...,{(Mpli):pli}  ;PHn PHONE Port outbound call route.

LINE is wired PSTN trunk.  Bluetooth is wireless Cellular trunk.

Simpler solution.  Do the same thing with a cell phone that supports Bluetooth and an Obi BT adapter.  It's less expensive.
Long live our new ObiLords!
