Google Voice problems w/call screening
SteveInWA:
Well, I sincerely appreciate the votes of confidence, but, in this case, I was not paying attention closely enough.
When call screening is enabled, and an inbound call to a GV number is forwarded to a real telephone number (e.g. a POTS, mobile or SIP DID configured on an OBi or other ATA), call screening works according to the settings I mentioned. However, when the inbound call is forwarded to the chat client (OBi in this case), call screening doesn't work. It was a moot point when Chat was used on a computer with a display, as the pop-up would show the caller ID and let you decide if you wanted to accept it or send it to voicemail.
I forgot about this, as I forward all inbound GV calls to SIP DIDs and mobile numbers, and not to Chat.
So: if you must have call screening, then you need to get an actual telephone number and forward to that number. Sorry for the cornfusion.

Thanks for the clarification Steve. To be clear, you are saying that in order to use call screening with my OBi device, I need to forward incoming calls to another DID configured on the same device? If so, that would be very disappointing.
I purchased this device primarily to
"enjoy all the benefits of Google Voice on your OBi device"
as stated here

I feel misled by the promotional material cited. I get that you can make outgoing calls on the device, but the inability to use incoming features without subscribing to additional services is disappointing given the broad claim. In any case, thanks for your clarification.

What you can do is subscribe to a free CallCentric account (if your registration address is not in the U.S. and Canada, there is no E911 fee--thus completely free (Need I hold you by the hand anymore?)). Instead of using Google chat to forward your incoming calls, you uncheck that and just forward the call to the free CallCentric number--that way, you will get both call screening and incoming caller ID name. Dialing out using the OBi and that GV account is the same...it will use the caller ID of that GV account.

Hello - I've tried the above but didn't get call screening to work - Has anyone been successful? Thanks

Thousands of people have this working successfully. You need to route your inbound calls through a SIP VoIP service provider, such as Callcentric.
