Title: Need to close a couple of Google Voice accounts...
Post by: N7AS on September 14, 2016, 01:36:28 PM
I have some GV accounts that I no longer use. Is there a way to close out those accounts so those numbers would be available for someone else?

Well, that's considerate of you!

Yes.

First, if you still have those Google Voice accounts configured on your OBi device(s), then log into the OBiTALK web portal, and delete those Google Voice SP configurations.

Then, log into one of the Google Voice accounts and go to this page:  https://www.google.com/voice#phones (https://www.google.com/voice#phones)

Click the "Delete" button next to your GV number.  Note that you cannot delete a number if you ported it in from some other carrier, as opposed to deleting a freebie number you obtained from Google's pool of numbers.

I was able to get rid of 6 of them except one I couldn't log into as I myst have changed the email and/or password for it. I think that one was 10 years ago and about 15 or 20 cell phones ago.

Steve would be more knowledgeable but I recall that if a number wasn't used for 9 months, it would be automatically deleted by GV.

Now where I am uncertain (and where Steve could clarify)--is if the number isn't used by the GV user--but before that 9 consecutive months is up, a SPAM call or text is made by telemarketers and is answered by GV voicemail--would that number start the 9-month waiting period again before being deleted?

Good point about the 9 month inactivity test.  Yes, that will kill the number(s).  No, the passive things you described (inbound calls that aren't answered) shouldn't reset the 9 month timer.  You need to actively use the account - make calls, send text messages, or even change settings.
