Title: Suddenly "No service configured error" out of the blue?
Post by: SkOrPn on November 16, 2017, 12:59:51 PM
Hello,

in the middle of needing to call my surgeon and primary doctor etc for all the things going physically wrong with me at my age, suddenly my Obi device is telling me I don't have the device setup. Yet it has worked flawlessly for 7 straight years until waking up this morning to a message on the phone telling me "No service configured error, please login and configure your device". How in the heck can an already perfectly configured device that I have been using for years suddenly not be configured? It was working last night before bed, but not after waking up?

I have to assume that Google Voice is no longer a valid service? Or is something else wrong entirely? I already check my ISP and network, no issues I can see and I have a great 40/5 connection to the internet, and a excellent Asus RT AC66U Router.

Please help, my Obi device and Google Voice is my only connection to my doctors and family and I live in a cell phone dead zone, so cell phones are useless here. Thank you very much for any help or advice.

Rod

Never mind, with a little more research I see that Google is updating certificates and Obihai devices need a firmware update, but Obihai is only updating models 200 and above. This means handicapped poor people like myself (who were the first to support Obihai) will need to spend money they don't have just to get their service back. Plus I now do not know how to use my PC to make do until then.

I guess I will try using my PC microphone and Hangouts service and pray that is good enough. Thanks

Hi Rod:  sorry to hear that this is impacting your ability to communicate.

There is a workaround for this issue, for OBi 100/110 owners.  Please see my sticky post:

Its OK bud, thank you very much for the concern. I realized since I am a Chrome user, have gmail of course and a headset that I would try using it with Hangouts or the GV site and yep it works just fine. I cant bring the handset with me doing it this way, but at least I seem to be able to make OK outgoing calls. I will just need to be near the PC for incoming I guess. Not to mention now the PC needs to stay on, lol, and I can't do that here.

I will check out the workaround and give it a thought. I see that the Obi200 has gone up in price over the years (I thought it was $35 at one time) and the Ooma device has come way down. Not sure what I am going to do because I can't afford $50 right now. Maybe I can find a broken obi200 on ebay, open it up and hope its repairable.

EDIT: And by the way, would there be any call quality degradation to using Bills gateway? This seems like an extra layer that could potentially harm the service, but maybe not? I'd rather put the $5.99 into an envelope marked "Obi200 fund" if the gateway makes the quality worse. Again I can use the PC with a headset for the next few months if I have to.

EDIT2: I now see Simonics has a refund policy if it does not work for you as intended. That is a very honest service. If anything it could buy me time to try and find a better price on the obi200. Thanks again Steve.

Glad you got Hangouts calling to work.

The Simonics GVGW has been quite reliable over the past couple years, based on other user comments, and there is no degredation in call quality, because it's all digitally encoded on the Google XMPP side, and all the gateway does is to translate the call signaling commands (not the audio stream, which is passed through).

The 200 is currently on sale for about $40 at B&H Photo in NY.  I've bought cameras from them before, and they are a large and very reliable company.  I believe it will never be lower than that.

Do NOT buy a used OBi device.  Since the large majority of original purchasers keep using them, the only ones that show up on eBay or Craigslist are typically defective.

Yeah good point on the ebay dead units thing. However being a retired electronics tech I find many times I can fix many devices, even when I find things in dumpsters. I cant even begin to count how many stereos, TV's etc that were dead and all it needed was a few components replaced. I just found a dead thrown away 32" Dell Monitor and all it took was $5 in caps to fix it. But with that said, I probably wont be doing that here.

Already paid the fee so going to give this gateway a try now. Steve, thank you VERY much for the advice and information. I been beating myself up trying to figure out what to do, just one day after the Doctor told me I MUST have this specific and more expensive diet, or surgery that I DO NOT want.

Yeah B&H sold me my camera about 7 years ago. I trust them fully. Thanks again Steve

EDIT: Wow, it seems to work perfectly so far. THANK YOU!

@SteveInWa

I just noticed that the 200 is at Newegg for $34.99 for early Black Friday sales. Thought you would like to know.

Thanks again
