Title: If You Buy Premium Support, will the obi202 updates automatically install?
Post by: ascendedmind on July 26, 2018, 02:34:57 PM
Hi I'm nervous about updating my Obi202 device as Polycom does not respond via email or online support. Now if I purchase the Premium Support for $10 will my device automatically update?

The end date for my OBi202 device was May 2014. Would that pose any issue for automatic firmware update? I want to avoid any hassles.

All OBi2xx devices should be automatically upgraded to work with the "new SIP GV" irrespective of warranty or paid support status.

If that was true, then why would I will asking this question when Polycon says:

You don't seem to know what "sarcastic" means.  I was not being sarcastic.  The remainder of your post shows that you have found that what I wrote was accurate.

I don't think that red annoy-o-gram should appear on your portal unless you have an OBi 100 or 110 on your list of devices.  It only applies to those discontinued products.

You should be able to delete your 202 off of the portal, restore it to factory defaults, then re-add it to the portal, and it should upgrade itself automatically.  You do not need paid support to do this.

If you need instructions to do this, here you go:

Thank you very much Steve in Wa,

I'm very surprised this can be done. So I can do this directly from obitalk account, w/o doing it manually?

Will I notice any difference in improvement if OBi202 device has not been updated since May 2014?

Btw, I'm from Puyallup by the Fairgrounds.

If your 202 truly has not been updated since 2014, then it won't work with Google Voice.  If you update it, it will.  I can't speak for the hundreds of other fixes or changes made to the firmware, since Polycom/Obihai has not posted any release notes in years.

The portal has the ability to remotely push firmware updates.  All it takes is for you to reset and start over as a new device being added to the portal.  In a few cases, it either took a day or two for it to be updated, or it wouldn't update, and needed some gyrating to make it happen, but overall, it should simply work.  This is in conjunction with Google's ongoing, complete replacement of their entire Google Voice infrastructure, including specific hardware and software to support provisioning OBiTALK devices.

Ha, I'm north of you.  When I moved here, it was interesting to see the many rivers and a city named after Native American tribes.  It was explained to me how to pronounce "Puyallup":  when the Indian tribes were exploring new territory, they came over a ridge, and a horrible, nauseating odor caught them by surprise.  Reacting to it, they said "PEW!" and then puked "HUAAAALP".

Thanks again I was born in Puyallup & returned later. People are not sure how to pronounce it correctly. Then I say say it like it stinks, then they get it.

I'm currently subscribed to phonepower using the Obi202 device.

However, tech support at Phonepower told me I would need to bypass the obitalk portal because eventually phonepower service would stop working due to phonepower no longer being an approved service provider.

I plan on canceling the phone service after I update the obi200 device as I thought I needed phonepower for this device to work & now just discovered after talking with Phonepower I never did.

I was never alerted from Obitalk or Polycon about this!

Well, to be really clear, you need some sort of service provider.  If not Phonepower, then either Google Voice or one of Phonepower's many competitors, like Callcentric, voip.ms, Anveo, etc.

Do you recommend having a service provider & using googlevoice? Or just pay for 911 service to use with googlevoice?

It is entirely up to you.  If you ask 5 people on this forum, you will probably get 5 different answers, most of them great.

There are plenty of reasonably-priced options.  If Google Voice's features appeal to you, then I'd suggest configuring Google Voice on SP1, and sign up with Callcentric for their $1.95 per month "North America Basic" plan.  It's only $.45/month more than the $1.50/month E911-only price, and it includes 120 minutes of outbound calling in case your GV number has a problem.  You'd then configure that on SP2.  The portal will ask you which SP to use for E911, and you will point it to SP2.

The new Google Voice platform treats OBiTALK devices the same way as it treats calling to/from Google Hangouts, or the in-beta Google Voice VoIP calling feature.  So, all you need is the official Google Voice app for Android.  You can enroll in the GV WiFi/4g VoIP calling beta here:  https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/voice/aI7m1PrV21Y/xj4mIwdeAgAJ (https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/voice/aI7m1PrV21Y/xj4mIwdeAgAJ)

If you're not familiar with the various features of Google Voice, I suggest spending some time reading through the help articles.  They are broken down into easy-to-digest chunks.   :)

Steve, the following tutorial did not work to update my obi202, now it no longer updates. I can't even configure it & says same original message as before. It won't allow me to even configure it on SP1 or any other SP.
Very frustrating. I tried uploading screenshots via PNG file w/o success.

Yes the forum software is broken, and not allowing image uploads.

The procedure does work.  I need more details from you to understand what you are doing.

Please carefully read and follow all the steps.  Do not skip anything.  Post exactly which step fails, and post in detail what happens.

This is where I run into problems after following instructions, which repeatedly failed after 3X.

Now, plug in the Ethernet cable and go to the OBiTALK dashboard, and click the button to add a device.  Follow the instructions to press **5 xxxx to add your device. After & input number it sends to receiver & acknowledges it.

When I click on SP1 & then Google setup now... I receive the following message:

"Your device may have outdated, old software which no longer complies with Google Voice security requirements.

The latest software, available through your OBiTALK account, will ensure that you can continue using Google Voice on your OBi securely. To get the latest software, please make sure your device is within its one-year warranty and support entitlement or that you have paid for extended support. SP1 Not Configured even after selecting google voice set-up or service provider. Just repeats same scenario. I could send you screenshots to?

 >:( :( ???

WTF.   Plug the power cord in and let the device boot up.  Pick up the phone.  Key in ***1, and it should say "Your IP address is..." and then read out either a 192.168.x.x address or a 10.0.x.x address.  We don't need to know that address, but we need to confirm that your device is at least connected properly to the Internet.

Hang up. Pick up the phone again and key in ***0 then 1# and reply with the firmware value it reads out.

 :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

WHAT?!?  Where did you buy this device, and when?  That is an extremely old firmware build.  Is this a brand new device from an authorized retailer like Amazon, Newegg, or B&H Photo, or did you get it from eBay or Craigslist, or did you find it at a bus station?  Now, the title of your post becomes clearer.  The current firmware is 3.2.2 (Build: 5898EX)

Try this.

Unplug the Ethernet and power cords.  Plug back in just the power cord.  Pick up the phone attached to the OBi and key in ***8 then 1 to confirm restoring to factory defaults, then hang up.  Wait a good long time until it restores and reboots and the left-most (Power) LED is on steady, and the middle LED (Internet) is occasionally flickering.

Open your desktop/laptop web browser, and go here:  http://fw.obihai.com/OBi202-3-2-2-5859EX-198839.fw (http://fw.obihai.com/OBi202-3-2-2-5859EX-198839.fw)

It will download the firmware to your computer.  Make note of the download directory.

Plug the Ethernet cable back into the device, unplug and then re-plug the power cord and let it fully boot up.

Pickup the phone again and key in ***1 and write down the IP address it reads to you.

Press Ctrl-T to open a new browser tab, and go to the IP address that was read out to you when you pressed ***1.

Enter "admin" for the user name and "admin" for the password.

This is the local webserver page for the OBi device.  Navigate to System Management-->Device Update.  Where it says "Select file to update firmware", click the "Choose file" button.  Navigate to the firmware file you downloaded and select it.  Press the Update button and watch.  It should download the firmware to the device, install it and finally verify it and reboot.  Be patient and above all, touch nothing; do not interrupt the process or you may turn it into a brick.

When it is done, pick up the phone and key in ***0 then 1# and confirm that it indeed updated to build 589EX.

Now, continue with my linked set of instructions, starting at this step:

I still can receive calls via my Googlevoice phone connected to my Bi202 device. However, my phonepower voicemail answers whenever there is a busy signal or whenever I don't answer. Phonepower is manually set within Obi202 device & not on the Obihai portal. My google voice number is call forwarded to my phonepower number & smartphone, within googlevoice account.

Did you, or did you not upgrade the firmware?

The Phonepower issue indicates that you haven't set up call forwarding on busy or no answer, back to your Google Voice number.  You need to do this on your Phonepower account.  Someone who's more familiar with PP can walk you through this.

Not yet, just nervous about possibly bricking the device like you warned. I had a phonepower service tech forward the phonepower number to my googlevoice number, but then my landline googlevoice phone would no longer ring.

Tech support could not figure it out the cause of this.

However my googlevoice number would ring on my smartphone as my googlevoice number is also call forwarded to my smartphone number. The Googlevoice number did not ring when forwarded to phonepower number or when phonepower was call forwarded to googlevoicenumber. Nether approach would ring phone.

Wow, it's like puling teeth from a shark to get a straight answer from drgeoff. I would not have asked if I read & understood it. Typically I have no issues, but this device is another story.

again, this does not explain or tell you what value to use.  Frustrating.

The FAQ has it written in black and white. I quote:
---------
By default, web access to the Internet (WAN) IP address of the OBi202 is disabled. Accessing the Internet (WAN) IP will show, "The requested URL was not found!" or "The web page cannot be found" in your browser. Note: You may always access the web page from the LAN side of the OBi202, e.g. connect your PC to the LAN port of the OBi202. To enable access to the OBi202,

- Dial ***0 from the phone connected to the OBi202
- Enter 30#
- Press 1 to Enter a New Value
- Press 1# to Enable
- Press 1 to Save

---------

Why do you write: "This does not explain or tell you what value to use."

"Frustrating" is the word that best describes trying to help you. No wonder SteveInWA walked away.

I'm able to disable WAN, but not enable it.
Just repeats old value of 3.0.1.4350 & press zero to repeat this information!
Pressing 1# to enable does not work to enable. It's stuck at - Press 1 to Enter a New Value

"Dial ***0 from the phone connected to the OBi202
- Enter 30#
- Press 1 to Enter a New Value
- Press 1# to Enable
- Press 1 to Save "

Furthermore, I'm not able to access Alternatively, the OBi Expert Configuration page via the OBiTALK web portal to enable WAN access. This issue is totally nucking futz. Like a dog chasing it's tail & going nowhere.

There is no system management & no ability within this forum to upload screenshots, thus frustrating anybody who were trying to help me.

Then after telling me delete device, then told here to upload device in order to select OBi202. An exercise in futility, thus making me appear like a total ass clown. ::) This issue I'm experiencing has even tested others patience, thus just walking away...

- Select the OBi202 from the OBi Dashboard
- Go to: System Management - Device Admin
- In the Web Server area, you may enable AccessFromWAN by checking the available box.

FUBAR:

"The firmware version is not read out when you press keys to enable access to the onboard management interface via the INTERNET port." Does not work if I enable or disable WAN or use of Internet or WAN port as described very FAQ.

Internet or WAN port, results in "The webpage cannot be found" or The requested URL was not found!

This should be an easy fix, however it has turned very convoluted. >:( :( :-[

2. Dial ***1 and note the IP address that is read out to you.

I already did that, several times. Should not typing in the ip address into the browser immediately open the OBihair page? It has not. Even after following the instruction. It must be something simple, causing this issue.

Shall I use the WAN port & enable it or Internet port?

Remember neither has worked. I did exactly as you previously said. I will repeat again.

Connect your computer to your router as usual. Connect the OBi's INTERNET port to a LAN port on your router.

Enabling access from the INTERNET port only needs to be done successfully once. That setting will remain until deliberately changed back or the OBi is reset to defaults.

Dial ***1. What IP address is read out? There is no security risk to reveal that here.

Point a browser at that address. You should be prompted for login details.

drgeoff, if I disable Internet (WAN) port access, does that automatically active internet port access?
The WAN port is disabled, shall I turn back on?

My OBi202 is plugged into the internet port on OBi202 to WAN port on Medialink Router

Not trying to frustrate you,
Use A: Leave my connection as is from OBi202 internet port (blue)to WAN port (blue) on Router?

Use B: use WAN port (Yellow) from OBi202 to WAN port (blue) on Router?

1.  There is no yellow WAN port on a 202. http://web.archive.org/web/20170622181610/http://www.obihai.com/docs/OBi202QSG.pdf

2.  WAN (Wide Area Network) = INTERNET.

3.  See my earlier post that begins "Connect your computer to your router as usual."

Yes, there is, you just sent me a screenshot validating what I stated. Perhaps I used the wrong words? It says WAN & it's yellow next to Internet colored blue in PDF just like mine is.

Semantics ??? :-\

Thank you very much Steve in Wa, Steve in USA, & last but not least Dr Geoff.

However, without the help of the two Stevos Steve in Wa, Steve in USA I would not have  successfully got my 2013 OBi202 device to update with the latest firmware you uploaded via link along with step-by-step tutorial. After exasperating Steve in Wa, Steve in USA  provides the link or key to successfully upload firmware. It now finally works!

It appeared gremlins were messing with me to helping me appear as a dumb ass clown::) :-[

Again thanks, btw Polycon support finally answered with a non-answer.

I appologize if this repeats someones answer, but 3 pages it too much to read.
IF a 200 is set to factory defaults and newly added to the OBITALK dashboard (or deleted and readded), the UPDATE functions are set to update automatically either periodically or on system start (a reboot).
I have not verified how reliable the F/W update is but the other updates drive me crazy if I forget to turn them off. So it does work.
