Title: OBI200 No Dial Tone
Post by: zoom38 on December 05, 2019, 05:44:35 AM
Good morning,

I'm having an issue with my OBI200.  My phone shows no line and there is no dial tone.  However google voice is still working, I still get voicemails.  I went into OBiT Dashboard which shows the status of my unit as connected.

The status lights on the unit are as follows:
Power light: solid green
Center light: flashing green
Phone light: solid green (whether phone line connected or not)

Is my unit toast?  Can someone advise what I can do to get it working again?

thx
Gary

Good morning to you!  I have to ask the obvious question:  did you try plugging in a completely different telephone and telephone line cord?

It's possible for the CPU and networking components to still be working, but the telephone line interface circuit could be fried, but first things first.

Yes, I did plug in a different phone using a different cord.   I've unplugged the unit let sit for 15 seconds and plugged back in, didn't change anything.  Thinking of trying a hard reset.  Opinion?

I wouldn't try a hard reset just yet.

Unplug everything from the OBi's PHONE port. From your router's admin interface, find the OBi's IP address.  Point a browser at that address and log in with admin and admin.  On the left side click on Status, then on Phone Status.  The two lines VBAT and TipRingVoltage should show something like 55V (12V) and 50V respectively.  If they are significantly lower or are blank, then your OBi has a hardware fault.  It isn't repairable by an end-user and even if a professional could do it the cost to you would exceed the price of a new one.

In the (unlikely in my opinion) event that those voltages are OK then try the reset.

Have you ever had anything plugged into the PHONE port other than a phone directly?

I logged in as you stated, both the VBAT and TipRingVoltage lines are blank.

I'm assuming its toast as you said.

To answer your question, prior to my issues, I had a phone line from the OBI200 to a phone distribution system and then to the phone.  During my diagnostics, I went from the 200 straight to the phone.

Yep.  It's dead, likely a result of plugging it into premises phone wiring that had other active telephone service still connected.

From the Quick Start Guide that came with your OBi200 (and available at https://www.obitalk.com/info/documents/qsg/obi-200-qsg-enus.pdf ):

"Important: Only an analog telephone or fax machine should be connected to the OBi PHONE port. Do not
connect a cable from the PHONE port to a telephone jack powered by the phone company. Doing so may
cause damage to the OBi electronics."

Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to help me.  Much appreciated.  Its dead for some other reason, I haven't had other telephone service for years and this system is isolated from that anyway.

thanks again,
Gary

Well, if you are so sure that it was some other reason you'll have no hesitation to connect a replacement OBi in the same way to that "phone distribution system".
