Title: Inbound: Local callers required to dial 10-digits?
Post by: mayer on March 01, 2014, 01:17:57 PM
I've been using Anveo with an Obihai 200 for a few months and just came to realize that local callers (same area code) calling me from a landline have to dial 10 digits (i.e. include the area code) or their call does not go through.

Is there a setting that will allow local landline callers to call me using only 7 digits?

I'd expect that to be controlled by THEIR phone company, not by a setting on your OBI or at ANVEO.

On the other hand, maybe there is something odd going on. For example, suppose your number is 212-845-xxxx. If you are saying that people can dial another number like 212-845-yyyy without the 212 area code, but have to dial the 212 area code when calling your 212-845-xxxx, that sounds bizarre. You might get an answer from the company that supplies the landline. I'd expect that calling everyone with your sort of number (exchange) would need to dial the area code, and you're just the only one they've tried it on. If they call lots of people in that 212-845-nnnn (for example) range, and you're the only one that needs the area code, that is very bizarre.

It does seem like the phone system nationwide is going to ten digit calling. I just got a new phone, and part of the setup was telling it what the local area code is. It turns out that it is dialing that area code when I dial seven numbers, so the call can go through. It isn't just passing those seven numbers straight through and expecting the phone company to know.

My area code in my area has been requiring the ten digit dialing for some time now.  It seems as if it's been year, but probably longer.
