why is Google Voice still working fine on my 6-year-old Obi110?

A couple of months ago, I bought three Obi200 on sale for $34.99 each.

The *only* reason was that I kept reading the threads here that the Obi110 was about to stop working.  :(   Now I feel the Obi200 purchases was unnecessary or premature?

There is nothing sinister about this.  Google has a very large number of XMPP servers around the country, and not all of them have been updated yet.  Your 110 will eventually stop working with Google Voice.

It's always good to have backup hardware, but thanks to some very intelligent users who figured out how to patch the OBi1xx firmware, it is unlikely to stop working with Google Voice any time soon.

Seriously? I just placed an order for a 202 because of the warnings and my spouse uses one line for work so her line CANNOT go unexpectedly dead one day. Is there any way to know more about when things could go dark for 110 users? Can I still morally sell them on eBay?

Mango

If you do sell it on eBay, I would install the third party firmware first so the buyer is not angry when the certificates change again.  Personally I would keep it around. If your phone service is that critical, it's good to have a hot spare configured and ready to go.

Well, both lines are critical (one is needed for security system and 911, but is used for little else, the other is my wifes business line which would result in my immediate demise if it went down and took days to recover).

So I bite the bullet, buy the 202 and rest easy? Is there any salvage value to the 110's if they can go "belly up dead" without (specifc) advance notice?

And is there a thread to walk me through how to install the third party firmware?

It's unlikely now that will happen to the product line as a whole. Of course, any hardware can be damaged by a power surge or lightning strike.

From the OBi's internal web UI: System Management, Device Update, Firmware Update.

Figured I'd spent a lot more time/value trying to discern next best step so I bought the 202 and looking forward to getting on with things. Thanks for the guidance!!

I purchased the newer Obi200 before the fw patch came out.  Would have loved to test that out before my upgrade.
