Newish Google Voice user and noticed I was dropped off a conference call right at the one hour mark.  Is there a hard limit on outgoing Google Voice calls?

A quick search around seems to imply that there was a four hour limit one time, then a three and then a two hour limit.

Any call time limits published anywhere?

Was that conference call business related?  And depends on that conference phone number that you are calling into.

Google Voice service has limitations on conference calls, or will not allow calling into certain free conference calling areas because of the high-cost of traffic pumping calls.

Try making that same conference call within your Gmail email inbox using Chrome browser, at the Google hangouts (bottom-left of screen) and see if the connections are allowed and/or how long.

For Google Voice service, especially for conference calling, these are called "traffic pumping" numbers and have very high cost of terminations.

Google Voice will not connect to these type of numbers.   If you have a conference number with 800 toll free numbers, it will work with GV.

This is inaccurate.

  • Google Voice has a three-hour call limit.  Many other VoIP service providers do the same, to prevent calls from being left off-hook accidentally, or to prevent their service from being used as a continuously open line.
  • There are three main types of conference calls:  1) ad-hoc, small conference calls, enabled by the calling party hitting "flash" to add a couple more people to the call.  2) conference call service providers that offer full-service, paid conference calling to businesses, with features like participant logging, moderator controls, recording, and operator-call in to verify participants for security, and 3) so-called "free" conference calls, which are a scam.
  • Google Voice does not block any conference call numbers.  However, in the case of #3 above, since these calls are charged excessively high inter-carrier connection rates, Google partially recoups its cost by charging $.01 per minute.  So, of course, you a) need to have calling credit funds on your Google account, and b) if you run out of credit, it'll hang up.
So:  a conference call that drops after two hours could be controlled by the conference provider or moderator.
