Connect OBi200 to Mac mini's ethernet port?

The Mac mini is connected via Wifi 5ghz. I've tried connecting the OBi200 to the Mac mini's ethernet port and enabled Internet sharing in System preferences but IP address 169.254.202.234 shows up in Network preferences.

Is what I'm trying to do possible?

I know next to nothing about Macs but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY1-dS3cICc seems to be what you wish to accomplish.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mchlp1413/mac implies that Macs have autosensing ethernet ports.  OBis do not but only one end of a connection needs to have it to make a crossover cable unnecessary.  However if you do have a crossover cable it won't do any harm trying it.

I tried it with a crossover cable connected to the Mac mini and a new Windows laptop. Same issue. Connects with 169.254.x.x on both.

Let's say I purchase a OBiWifi adapter. Do I need a router to set it up?

You left click one adapter to select then CTRL and left click the 2nd.
When I bridged the adapters, the WiFi adapter disconnected and I had to reconnect.
I had my OBi200 plugged in the ethernet port before bridging and it wouldn't connect.
It connected after power cycling the OBi200.

That is irrelevant and not your issue.

The OBi200 has only one ethernet jack and it is a LAN port, not WAN.  The OBi202, 302, 212 and 312 contain a router and have two ethernet jacks, one of which is always LAN and the other is WAN by default.

I got it to work on Windows and also Manjaro Linux via bridge connection by disabling IPv6 in the bridge properties and power cycling the OBi200 after creating the bridge as suggested by @azrobert but I need it to work via MacOS.

MacOS does not have Wifi + Ethernet bridge. Only Internet sharing via NAT.

I tried setting up static IPs on the OBi and in the MacOS ethernet settings but get an error that the IP address is already being used. I also rebooted the router to release the IP from when I had the OBi plugged in to set up the static IPs but same issue.


Is it possible to do this with an OBi200 and my router or an OBi200 and MacOS?

I know zip about MacOS, so I can't help you there.

I'm assuming you're doing this because your OBi200 and router are in different rooms.

You can purchase a wireless bridge to solve this problem. Another option is to create your own wireless bridge using an old router and Tomato or DD-WRT firmware.

Check supported routers.
