Hello:

I installed my OBi 110, set up my Google Voice Account and was able to make a call.

Here they come, the really dumb questions, that is:

  • My call was a VOIP call, right?
  • Who provided the VOIP service, Google Voice?
  • Do I need to subscribe to a VOIP service?

Thanks,

Rob.

My call was a VOIP call, right?

Since you have both Google Voice and a telephone line, it could be either.  If you didn't prefix the number you dialed with **n, the call was sent to the provider (Google Voice or POTS line) that is selected by your PrimaryLine setting.  You can verify where each call went by looking at the Call History in the OBi.

Who provided the VOIP service, Google Voice?

Assuming you signed up for a Google Voice account and configured that account on your OBi using your username/password for that account, yes.

Do I need to subscribe to a VOIP service?

Not if you're happy with what you currently have.  If you make a lot of international calls, it's possible a VoIP service provider might have better rates for the destinations you wish to call than what Google Voice charges.  If you were to discontinue your POTS line, you might want a VoIP service to supply 911 service.
