Been using 3C Softswitch https://www.3c.co.uk/ui/ for a couple years now - for my free DID in UK.  We have family that calls it and my OBI rings here in Seattle area - mother in law calls my wife nearly every day (she is nice - so that's ok).

I think they might be down, and possibly they are gone - anyone know of some alternatices?

Not a free one but a $ .99 one from Localphone. Also, if you get a free i-number DID from Localphone and your mother in law has a Localphone calling card, she can access through her local calling card access number your I -number DID for free. No costs whatsoever. My mother does it like that.

You could use a SIPBroker access number in conjunction with a supported provider.
I tested by calling a Phoenix access number with a PSTN phone and my CallCentric account.
I dialed access number 602-427-5727
Waited for the prompt, then dialed *46217772223333
*462 is the code for CallCentric.
1777222333 is my CallCentric Account number.
I was connected to my CallCentric account.
This should work the same with a U.K. access number.
Check the SipBroker white pages to see if one of your current providers is supported.

Another possible provider is sipgate.co.uk. Set up and DID is free , no charges to you for incoming calls. They have geographic UK numbers across the UK, so it should be possible to get one local to your mother in law, so calls to it for her will only be charged at local rate.

The one complication is that to get a sipgate.co.uk geographic number, you have to be resident in the UK. You would have to get your mother in law to register the number. After that the number can be used anywhere in the world. Their web site even advertises that as a benefit to users.

I've been using them here in the UK for incoming and some outgoing calls for several years - quality and reliability seem good. Anyhow there's no costs involved in trying!

Great news, 3C is back up! Local FREE DID anywhere in UK!

This is pretty neat stuff - just to clarify - the destination call must be a VOIP DID that resides on my OBI?

I tested it by calling a Seattle IPKALL PTSN number, then entered *462 (which is the code for Callcentric) then my free New York, Callcentric # - and my home phone rang, showing the caller ID of my cell.
