Title: OBI110 line port (RJ-11) to telephone line RJ-45 wall socket
Post by: Ash91 on December 11, 2015, 11:30:22 AM
Hello everyone,

I just purchased OBI 110 and would like to use it in my home. But the problem is with my PSTN wall socket type is RJ45. I read many posts on this, and most of them recommend to use a RJ-11 to RJ-45 cable. But I dont find any cables or adapters for RJ-11 to RJ-45 around my place. So I wanted to know is there any other way in order to solve this? Thanks in advance

I don't understand what answer you are expecting to get.  It that RJ45 socket is really your only PSTN socket then the only options are:

1.  Buy a cable or adaptor.

2.  Make your own cable.

3.  Replace the wall socket.

An RJ-11/RJ-14 plug will mate just fine with an RJ-45 receptacle.

If the center two pins of the RJ-45 receptacle are wired to your PSTN line, everything will be fine.

As InetUser said, an RJ11 modular plug will plug right into an RJ45 jack with no problem. As long as the jack is wired and terminated correctly for PSTN it should work without issue.

I would be cautious putting an RJ11 into a RJ45 socket. The RJ11 has high plastic walls on either side of the 2/4 pins. That can raise the associated pins up higher than desired and perhaps pop them out of the slots. While that will not cause a problem with the RJ11 plug, an RJ45 inserted after the fact may not have those metal pins to connect to.

I have had trouble sticking a phone jack into an ethernet jack on my patch panel.

I would just install a phone jack for a more secure connection, (and save the ethernet jack)

Thanks for the reply guys. What if I make a rj11 to rj45 cable in order to connect it?
And as some said, can I just plug a RJ11 connector to a RJ45 socket? Wont it cause any problem? Do I need to check anything like the wiring of the wall socket before giving direct plug of RJ11 to Rj45? Thanks again :)

You can plug the RJ-11 into an RJ45 socket.  Just make sure you slide the plug dead center.  It's low voltage no damage will be done.  Also the RJ-11 plug is much smaller than than the RJ 45 socket make sure it's not going to be bumped by accident because the plug can get loose quiet easily.

This is what you should do.  From Obi110 end plug the RJ11 dead center to the RJ-45 socket. From telephone end plug the RJ-11 dead center to RJ-45.  As long the RJ-45 is punched ethernet 568b standard you should be fine.

How many engineers does it take to screw in a light bulb, or, in this case, plug in a telephone cord?  This is an amusing thread.

Taoman, inetuser and Volta win the gold stars for the right answer.  Just do it.

If you are having trouble sleeping, you can read all about it here:
