Title: Obi202 will not factory reset
Post by: marksatterfield on January 06, 2016, 04:30:21 PM
Obi202 went "out of service" for some odd reason.  No idea what reason.  I have other Obi devices that are just fine.

Condition at the device is
* Ethernet light mostly on and flickers from time to time
* No other lights on (power light is not on)
* Device does not appear to be sending DHCP request -- nothing showing up reserved on the router, although I haven't wireshark'ed it.

I've tried to factory reset it a dozen times, no love.
* Red power light comes on for a few moments, then turns dark
* Green Ethernet light mostly on and flickers from time to time

Any help guys?

If you have other OBi devices that do work, swap one of those device's power supply with the power supply on the failing OBi.  Power up both devices.  Does the problem move with the power supply?  If so, bad power supply.  If not, dead OBi; time for a new one.

Haven't figured out the process or what the failure is yet... but...

* Left Obi off overnight
* Plugged in, and it booted!
* Unplugged and moved to the room where I needed it to be...
* And... fail.  Will not boot.  With or without the ethernet cable plugged in, so it has nothing to do with DHCP.
* Waited half dozen hours, and it booted again!  Had to do a few hard resets
* Wasn't able to configure it through the portal due to lack of time
* Half dozen hours later... it was dead again
* Spent quite a bit of time booting, and rebooting, and pressing the factory reset button, and...and...and
* And finally, it booted again, and I was able to configure it correctly

So... for anyone else experiencing this problem with an Obi, for now my recommendation is:
* Leave it unplugged overnight or for a day
* Factory reset (with the pin on the back) on first boot
* Hope for the best

Are you one of those "Men are from Mars" guys who refuses to follow directions?

My Siamese cat could have performed the troubleshooting steps I described above, in 10 minutes, even without thumbs.

Swap the power supplies and see where the problem ends up.

Steve...your instructions were simple and clear but you can't fix stupid. So the new troubleshooting guide is to leave the OBi unplugged for a day or so and hope for the best. Stupid f**k!

And... this isn't even the first time you reported this problem.
