Just saw this post (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30531600-Obihai-disabled-my-device-Demanding-10-fee) on DSLR:

To automatically upgrade this device using the OBiTALK portal as well as get access to Obihai's Premium Support help desk, a paid support plan is required."

Is there any truth to this?

Yes and no. What is written on the portal is absolutely true. What is written about OBihai disabling the local admin webserver is complete balderdash.

It is also possible to download the firmware to one's computer and use the local web GUI to upload that to the device.  Having done that one can (re)configure GV.  No payment required.

That forum has got to be the most worthless collection of bitter, Angry White Men ever.  Find some company to complain about, make an ignorant, wildly incorrect claim, and then build a lynch mob around it.  Rant about how the Man is trying to deceive them, steal their money, and deny them their God-Given Right to something.  No wonder Trump has so many followers.
