Title: Encrypted voip?
Post by: NewbeeObi123 on October 16, 2016, 02:01:22 PM
Hi,

Is Google voice encrypted?  If not is there another voip provider that is that works with Obi?

Thanks.

No and no.

No service provider offers fully encrypted calls via the PSTN, but if you wish you may set up a VPN between two or more locations, with an OBi at each end, and make encrypted calls over your VPN.

Unless you're discussing trade secrets worth $X,XXX,XXX or more, this is likely more trouble than it's worth.  Keep your home network locked down tight (change default passwords, use WPA2 with a strong key, don't use DMZ or port forwarding, use antivirus software, don't leave your network physically accessible to the public) and call it a day.

I have always presumed that encrypting a VoIP channel increases latency.  Is this indeed the case, and if so, would anyone care to speculate as to how much of an increase is involved?

No, it is not a given that encryption would introduce additional delay into a digital transmission system.  Many encryption systems are based on XORing the serial bitstream with a scrambling sequence.  That does not introduce delay, nor does the subsequent XORing with the same scrambling sequence to recover the original at the descrambler.
