As there have been a number of Obi users recently signing up with our service, I thought I'd spend a little time here clarifying some questions I have received over the past week.
SteveInWA's guide at http://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=13147.0 is the place to start. Thanks, Steve!
PayPal
The last day or so we have seen some delays from PayPal validating payments and sending us the web "ping" that activates accounts. Please be patient; I am not trying to steal your money.
GV authorization
After you go through the configuration, if you find you made a mistake such as entering the wrong GV number, you can use Deauthorize to clear your config and start over. Remember that if you use Deauthorize it will clear your SIP credentials, so you would have to set everything up again on the Obi.
If you revoke authorization on the Google side, eventually your account will log out and you will be notified by e-mail that it failed to log in.
Essentially this works the same way as it did with your Obi. If you revoked the Obi's authorization to Google Voice (actually "Google Chat" or "Google Talk") then it would stop working.
Lifetime of service
As was mentioned in another thread, our service costs $6 one-time setup fee to cover server costs. Thereafter the service is free and without any guarantees. I intend to operate the service as long as it remains technically possible, which is to say, as long as Google keeps allowing us and Obi devices to connect.
#Obihai Support: From the pov of the device, Simon Tel. services are based on SIP and are SIP UA brand agnostic.
Support
I will participate in this forum from time to time, as well as the forum at support.simonics.com. There's also a good community at dslreports.com/forum/voip where GVGW is sometimes discussed. Direct e-mails to me requesting configuration support will not be answered quickly if at all; please use the community resources and I'll participate when I can.
Thanks for the helpful mini-FAQ, Bill.
May I ask how long you've been working on the GVGW? And how much of a challenge it was to set up?
Just wanted to get a sense of how difficult it will be to maintain GVGW if Google Voice makes future changes. I'd love to see my Obi 100 staying functional for years to come, but if GV updates pose significant technical changes, I can understand GVGW not being able to sustain.
Cheers

I leave Bill to answer your specific questions but I'll say that, based on the publicly available information, there was no insurmountable technical challenge which stopped your OBi100 working with GV. Obihai exercised their right to choose not to release an updated firmware containing the necessary changes. The speed with which Obihai was able to release new firmwares for their other products once the root cause was identified suggests to me that it did not require a lot of new code to be written.

I hope this isn't true. I do admit that I'm disappointed in Obihai. I did a lot of research before I went with it, and I feel like it's the best box on the market, from a technical standpoint. But good tech is only part of the equation. It seems like Obihai is a company run by technicans who develop excellent, technical stuff, but they don't get anyone to help with UI or documentation or anything like that. But the worst is remembering when you bought what you thought was a technically superior device just a few years ago and now find that it's obsolete, unsupported, and one step away from the landfill. My Obi110 was running so great that I never even knew about the "End of Life" announcement until the other day, when it stopped working because of lack of firmware updates. I certainly didn't spend $79 or whatever it was that I did a few years ago on a piece of hardware that would reach its 'end of life' one year later -- that does not build trust in the Obihai brand.
Not sure if this is the most fitting thread but I had another question occur to me about GVGW.
Since GVGW adds the bonus feature of CNAM which native GV does not provide, is there also a way in GVGW to hide/block your outgoing caller id per call (like with the telco *67). Google Voice has no way to do this, but perhaps Mr. Simon has enabled it?
(or, if not..... could it be added in a future update?)

I have been running GVGW since November 2011. In 2015 it was reworked to use the Oauth2 token system. I am no longer working on the gateway in terms of new features but it is and will continue to be actively maintained.

*67 is a feature that is not published but usually works.

I do believe the obi box is the only one on the market that directly integrates with gv. I don't believe there's any other options besides a pbx and/or gv gateway combined with a generic ATA. We still have a traditional analog phone here, probably from the 80's. It works too.. Never needed any software update either!

I collect old analog phones. What I love about the Obi is that I can use them again -- I backfeed my home wiring to the Obi, and have all my old phones on it. The rotary ones can't dial out, that's pretty much the only snag. I would love to get that to work.

The Grandstream HT502 ATA accepts rotary dialing. Someone's selling 2 for $12 on eBay right now; bring your own power supply (common 12V barrel plug).
Thanks! I'm very happy to report that Simon Telephonics and your instructions got my "obsolete" Obi100 working inside of 5 minutes. I've had the unit for years and love it, but I was quite unhappy with no official notification of EOL from Obihai before the unit stopped. However, Obi did manage to find my email address in time to notify me of the current B&H Obi200 sale - just 3 days after my 100 quit. Coincidence? Hmmmm. :-\
I have one Obi 110 with two GV numbers. Would I pay one setup fee or two?
It's one fee per account. Each account handles one google voice number.
Thanks for clarifying.
Dear Simon,
Thank you for providing this fix for the Obi100. I found a third party post that explains how to do this and it has worked perfectly. I've been tearing my hair out dealing with the Obihai EOL tale. Have managed to dodge the bullet by various means until now. Thank you for giving my little Obi100 a new life! As a small business person I like what GV costs ... and your $6 is a small price to pay to retain that.
Rock on man!

What were you smoking?
It's been a while and my memory of this may be off, but what I remember is that OBI did not make a firmware update available publicly and that some private party posted a link to it which I used to get the firmware.

Let me also add that I just signed up at the Simon Telephonics site and also got my OBI100 up and running again with Google Voice in just a few minutes using the step by step instruction and screenshots from the appropriate thread on the obi forums.
I finally got bit by the change today, and found the solution here. I had to do a factory reset of my device to get the new configuration to work, but now it's registered again. I was going to buy a 202 until I got to wondering if they'd EOL it like my 110. For $6 my 110 has a new lease on life.
Just another vote of confidence and THANKS.
I have an Obi100 and an Obi110.
The Obi110 just quit today. Setting up an GVGW account on simonics.com was pretty easy. My wife's phone is working again.
And I know what to do if/when the Obi100 croaks.
My Obi110 was not working today and used this method to bring it back to life. Thanks.
Does this gateway have any impact on GV performance?

Does this gateway have any impact on GV performance?
There is no noticeable impact on performance. There are two parts to VoIP calls: the "signalling" information, and the "media" stream (your digitized voice). The gateway is taking the XMPP signalling commands and translating them into SIP commands and vice-versa. There isn't much data in the signalling portion.
The gateway just passes along the same RTP media stream as it gets it; it is not doing any transcoding, so no delay with that.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I guess my question should be how many calls the gateway can handle simultaneously without noticeable impact on GV call. I guess there must be a large number of Obi1x0 boxes that now start to have that "Backing off" issue....
Only Bill Simon can answer that, as it depends on his willingness to keep adding more server capacity on his own dime. Nowadays, servers are virtualized in the cloud, not running on some guy's PC in the basement, so it is pretty easy to dynamically adjust capacity to meet demand.

Good question. Bill Simon uses DigitalCloud which allows easy scalability. He added a new proxy server 2 days ago and another one today, apparently.

I got hit with the 'backing off' error a couple of days ago. Thanks to SteveinWA's detailed instructions I decided to give Simon's GVGW a shot. I stubbed my toe once getting it going but now it is working fine. Might go with the OBI200 someday but for now I'm 'backing off'. 8) I see SteveinWA has hero status. I guess I would second that. Like someone else posted, I feed the phone output from the OBI100 into the house wiring (line 2). It is a two story house and we have phones everywhere. Not one problem, ever.
Having trouble and much frustration with PhonePower losing registration and confusing support and claims they are working a solution to losing the resync feature when they were an ASP.
I decided to delete PP from OBi for now and forward calls to my GV and ran across this thread. I've have of course heard of the Simonics gateway over the years, but never really looked into it. Although I have an OBi200 I signed up and set up as a generic following Steve's link to get CNAM.
Regarding the $6 onetime setup fee. I think that is very fair. In fact, I would be willing to pay the $6 fee next year about this time. And, every year thereafter that things keep working. That works out to 50 cents per month. Heck, I am paying 80 cents a month to Anveo for E911 support. Also, another $1 per month to Anveo for a phone number for fax and backup. My wife insists we need the fax although for the last year or so the only fax's we get are the ones we send to ourselves to make sure it is working. But, the backup did come in handy the last few days. I am legacy to Anveo but I pay them $1.80 per month for those two things.
So, I am wondering, Mr. Bill, if there is not a bit more of an opportunity. Not sure what is involved but I would be willing to pay $20 per year, or thereabouts, for clean fax support and E911 support and clean GVGW. Just my idle $.02.
Another vote of confidence in Simonics.com's service. My Obi110A is rock-solid with this solution!
Question for Bill Simon. In the dashboard: if say my Simonics GVGW is SP2 I can check to have the primary service in SP1 receive a stutter tone when the GV line has a voicemail. Frankly, I've never really realized what that option is supposed to do. Is there any way this works with the Simonics service?
The message waiting indicator (stutter tone in your case; in the case of VoIP desk phones it's usually an LED and a beep) is triggered by a special SIP message from the provider that says whether you have voicemail waiting, and usually how many messages are waiting.
We don't offer that service because that information is not available over the Google XMPP channel in order to relay it to the SIP user.

Suspect there may be some leftover setting in your Obi settings causing this. I'd consider a reset of the Obi device, then loading up the GVGW credentials

Do you get an error message when dialing out? If so, what is it?
What SP slot did you configure Simonics on? SP1 or SP2?
What is the following field set to?
Physical Interfaces-->Phone 1-->PrimaryLine

I followed the step-by-step instructions in the "OBi 100/110: illustrated, step-by-step instructions to use Simonics GVGW" stickied thread.
My SP1 status is still offline in Obitalk portal
On Simon Telephonics page it says "ACCOUNT STATUS YOUR SIP SETTINGS

What am I missing? Am I supposed to be doing something on https://simonics.com/gw/ to get this to work? Reboot? Reset?
I signed up for Simon service. Day one was ok, day two I am getting incoming calls from number 1234567999 every 10 mins all night lone (middle of the night). no one is on the other end and the call logs do not show up on Google voice. Never had this problem before, EVER. So annoying.

Glad I'm not the only one! I've been dealing with this all afternoon, as well.
Reset my Obi100 several times already (both ***81 and via the web configuration), even deleted the SP1 GVGW settings, but the phone still kept ringing. Had to delete the device from my Obitalk dashboard so it would stop ringing.
The number of the incoming calls seem to change, too. Sometimes it's a full 10 digit number, while the most recent are from "1004". Also of note, several times, when trying to pick up, there was a fax-like series of beeps, while the most recent calls were just silence.
Let it sit for two hours, re-added the Simonics GVGW and a few minutes later, it's gone back to ringing non-stop.
Just deleted the SP1 GVGW configuration again, but it's still ringing away, so once again had to delete the device from my dashboard.
Really hope it's a temporary bug of some sort, whether GVGW or otherwise.

Ah, thanks much, SteveInWA. Changing those settings to block SIP scanners now!
Uncertain if it's a common issue, maybe it'd be a good idea to include this link in your GVGW setup guide forum thread
I was having trouble with outgoing calls. I could ring the person and when they picked up they could not hear me or I them. I set my ports to 5070 on both incoming and outgoing and the problem is solved! Just thought I would share this information in case ianybody else is having this problem. As a side note, my calls are clearer than before with the Simonics fix and there is absolutely NO LAG whatsoever.

Thanks, I went ahead and changed them to 5070 in my Obi dashboard SP1 configuration menu. See attached screenshots
But in the Expert menu, under Service providers, ITSP for Profile A SIP, I see ProxyServerPort and OutboundProxyPort are changed to 5070, but RegistrarServerPort is still 5060. Should this be changed to 5070, or will it not have an effect?

My Obi100 works well again with Google Voice using Simonics, with ONE exception:

Only static noise when answered. Similar experience? Solutions?

Just got my first incoming calls to Simonics GVGW and the CNAM worked perfectly. Very nice.
Got this message:
Sorry, we are temporarily not taking new users for Google Voice Gateway.
Any idea when this will be open again?
Same here, wanted to sign up now that my 100 is dead but guess he's been flooded with new users.
Let me change something that was wrong in my previous posts. My OBI is a model 110, not a 100.
After my OBI110 stopped working roughly a week ago, I signed up with the Simon GVGW and had my phone service working again within minutes after following the steps in the guide here and the instructions on the Simon website.
Now, roughly one week later, I've been unable to make outgoing calls. A voice on the line states that the service provider can't make the call and has given either error numbers 480 and 500.
Incoming calls are working fine.
What is going on and what do I have to do to fix this? I can provide more details if you need them such as my router model.
But since I've had working phone service using the Simon GVGW for about a week, I doubt that I setup anything incorrectly.
Also, before my OBI stopped working about a week ago, it had worked fine for a year or two continuously, so I doubt I setup anything wrong inside my OBI or with the OBI dashboard website.
I think that something external to what is under my control has just changed.
Normally the 500 error is a result of your GV account being disconnected because you are not registered. But in your case since you are able to receive calls then clearly you are registered.
We're not experiencing any system-level problems and inbound/outbound are working ok in my tests. I would review your settings again and make sure nothing has changed. Also make sure you can place calls through Hangouts.
Hello Bill.
I referred a good friend to your GVGW, but when he tried to sign up today it refused him.
Will this be corrected sometime soon ??
Thanks.
I am working on some optimizations to allow further growth. What we have now is working fine for users who got through the gate. I need to prepare for the next surge so that existing users, especially those who have been with us for years, aren't negatively affected by the present horde.
There are already a few hundred on the waiting list since last night.

WOW! Congrats on your success. I have known of your service for years, but didn't check into until this weekend and I got through the gate. ;D
Just wanted to add that I got an email invite a couple of days after requesting it on Bill's GVGW server (using his Notify Me option if signups are closed), and my Obi is working fine again with GV.
Thanks Bill for this service.
I switched over to Simonics this morning to revive my Obi 110. Seems to be working fine. Thanks Bill! I am having an issue that I no longer get the stutter tone if there is a voice mail pending on GV. I have Voicemail Notification for Phone 1 active on the configuration page. Is there something else I need to do to enable the stutter/voicemail indicator?
I think he will tell there is no MWI for GV.
That's correct. Google Voice does not provide us a message waiting indicator thus we do not relay one to your device.
You must have been using an old (pre-oauth2) firmware if you were still getting GV message waiting indicators.
I'm still waiting for your invitation mail. I did not request for all devices I have, so just submitted for another one yesterday. Thank you for your work, Bill.
@billsimon
What service do you use for CNAM lookups?
Thanks Simon for saving my Obi100. Now I want to explore some of the additional features. I am a complete novice, so any expanded instructions for these two features would be appreciated:
-Register multiple extensions, all tied to your Google Voice number. Call and transfer calls between them like a miniature phone system.
-Receive faxes by e-mail. Here is what happened when I had topfreefax.com fax my own phone #:
1. I got an email that said: Transmission Status: Failed. Reason for Failure: No remote fax device. Attached to this email was the contents of the fax, but this email goes to the sender, not the receiver.
2. I received a 51 second voice mail from (000)000-0000 <-- yes, it showed as all zeros, that appeared in hangouts. The phone did not ring, and the call did not show up in Google Voice history. The voice mail was a series of beeps. So the receiver does not get the fax.
@proteus - the CNAM provider is Telo.
@oreader - support.simonics.com FAQ section describes how you can register multiple devices to the same GVGW account, and how you can register them with extension numbers in order to dial between them like a PBX.
The fax service (remember: experimental) works by clicking "Receive Fax" on the GVGW dashboard. From then on all calls are directed to the fax service which will receive the fax and e-mail it to you. If you don't want the fax service to answer, you need to go back to the dashboard and use the "Clear URI" button to unset the fax option. Then calls will be sent to your registered Obi device instead.

Hello all. I've been trying to get Simonics GVGW working for the past few days, but no luck so far. I've followed the instructions closely and read all of the suggestions in this thread. So far, nothing fixes the issue. I have an OBI100 with 2886 firmware configured with Google Voice. Was previously configured with Vestalink VoIP. I've reset the OBI multiple times using both the OBI button and the ***8 reset from handset.
Before configuring GVGW, I have Google Voice working correctly on the OBI and am receiving and making calls with no issues; bi-directional voice works. Once I configure GVGW, the portal successfully shows as "Registered" on SP1.
But, here is the behavior:
- Outbound calls from OBI to my cell phone work and my voice can be heard by the cell phone. However, I can't hear anything back from the cell phone.
- Inbound calls from my cell phone to OBI are not received by OBI. Instead they are received only by Google Voice and my computer rings.
Can someone please help me troubleshoot this behavior? I've done all I can do and now relying on the good folks in this forum. Thank you!
I would start by connecting the obi box directly to your modem and retest. Make sure you reboot the modem after connecting the obibox and later when reconnecting your router. This will determine if it's a firewall (router) issue or a obi/gv config issue. My money is on this being a firewall issue.

Did you delete your Google Voice config before configuring GVGW or is it also still configured on your OBi?
What kind of router do you have? Does it have a SIP ALG setting?
Connecting your OBi directly to your modem (temporarily bypassing your router) as GPz1100 suggested would be a good test.

Good idea here, thanks! I'll try to do this later tonight and try to rule out the router. You are correct in your assumption that the OBI is connected to an Asus router, then connecting to a cable modem. I'll report back on this later today.

Before configuring GVGW, I have Google Voice working correctly on the OBI and am receiving and making calls with no issues; bi-directional voice works. Once I configure GVGW, the portal successfully shows as "Registered" on SP1.
Yes, Google Voice was previously on SP1. Per the instructions, I deleted that first before configuring GVGW.
My router is an Asus RT-AC66R. It has a setting called "SIP Passthrough" in the WAN/NAT section and the setting is enabled. Only setting disabled in this section is "Enable PPoE Relay".

Thank you!
Update: My phone connected to OBI now rings on incoming calls and shows the callerid from GVGW. However, still no inbound voice, but they can hear me.
Also, I temporarily disabled the firewall on the ASUS router, no change. I'll still do the test connecting directly to the modem, but I can't do this until the end of the day.

My RT-AC68U is set for "Enabled + NAT helper" for SIP Passthrough.

Thanks for the info. Your router is one step "better" than mine I guess. I have these options under NAT, no NAT helper. Allowed values are only Enable or Disable:
PPTP Passthrough
L2TP Passthrough
IPSec Passthrough
RTSP Passthrough
H.323 Passthrough
SIP Passthrough
Enable PPPoE Relay
All are enabled except the last one. Tried flipping "SIP Passthrough" to disabled, but still no joy, so flipped it back.

Solution found! :)
Step 2 in the instructions says to delete the Service Provider (SP1 or SP2) used by Google Voice. BUT... there is another deletion that was needed to enable my service and fully clear the past OBI configuration. In the "Device Information" section in the OBI portal (just above the Service Provider section), there is a button called "Delete Device". Once I pressed this and again reconfigured OBI, it worked! ;D ;D ;D Evidently my past service provider "Vestalink" made a change here that is incompatible with Simonics GVGW.
THANK YOU to GPz1100 and Taoman for offering your helpful suggestions! Hoping SteveInWA will edit the step by step instructions to include the device deletion so that others won't have this issue.

In the very large majority of cases, there's no need to delete the device. You just happened to have some left-over configuration mess on your OBi. Given that the dreadful Vestalink seems finally dead, I'm not going to worry about this.

If it helps even 1 person, isn't it worth updating? What if there is an issue with some other VoIP config? Yeah, probably Vestalink is the only one using OBI, but people still may be transferring out from them. It was VERY difficult getting my number ported out of Vestalink and their staff was not much help! Took me 3 weeks and MANY hours trying to communicate with them. So glad I'm finally back on GV and using the GVGW!
My OBI110 on simonics was working fine for months since I got it. Now from last few weeks I randomly get no service configured and I had to reboot my OBI110 that fixes it. Any one else? Any fix? Is this OBI or Simonics?
