Before I take matters to an extreme I am looking for a way to ssh, mount the usb port and if necessary install FreeNAS and change the startup script.

All I want is the product to operate as advertised  :'(

Fyi1: stating that it is outdated promotion material is a real copout and abdication of your customer responsibility.
Fyi2: you also have refused to provide an RMA or refund as requested so I have no choice but to take whatever steps  necessary to restore the product to its advertised capability

WTF?  Are you a lawyer with too much time on your hands?  It'll be a class action lawsuit with a class of one, that will cost tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.

For the measly $50 you are offering somebody to hack the firmware, you can simply buy a Raspberry Pi and turn it into a high-performance Samba file server.
