Title: Why is my Obi calling home and how do I stop it?
Post by: VirtualMonitoring on November 17, 2011, 08:37:17 AM
I am working with an Obi100 and debugging with Ethereal. There are lots of packets going to IP address 204.236.134.234 on port 10000 but I have not entered that address anywhere in my settings.

I can only assume it is talking to some server that is being run by Obihai. The data looks like it is encrypted in some way. Does anyone know who might be on the receiving end of these packets and is there any way to stop them?

The OBis do talk to the mothership.  You can turn off Auto provisioning but they will still chatter away... think OBiTalk network.  God help us when they become self aware.

Pinging prov.obitalk.com [204.236.134.243] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 204.236.134.243: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=46
Reply from 204.236.134.243: bytes=32 time=65ms TTL=46

The last 2 digits of the above IP address are reversed from your post.  But anywho...

Firewall if it bothers you.

When I first got my Obi it was doing the same thing, UNTIL I unchecked my home number in my account on the googlevoice setting page. After I did that my home phone never rang again.
I first started using GV ( WAY before Obi) years ago and had it ring my home phone so that is why my home number was listed and checked there. I tried to delete it all together, but you cant.
So if your home phone is checked try unchecking it and see if that works for you, as I said it did for me...

Hope this helps..

It does bother me and I'm sure it will bother my many Customers. I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the documentation that the device has a "back door"  :(

Let's just say I won't be doing any telephone banking with an Obihai device  ;)

If the outgoing packets were in ASCII format and human readable, then I may not be as concerned, but as they are encrypted and Obihai haven't bothered to advise users in the documentation, it worries me.
