Title: how do I check voicemail from phone with my googlevoice account

subject says it all.  I expected dialing 1# to work.  It doesn't

What do I dial?

Simply dial your Google Voice number from your Google Voice trunk.

If you set Speed Dial 1 to your Google Voice number, dialing 1# will work as you expected.
