Title: [S]Is it possible that voice quality is better using GMail than a real VOIP SP
Post by: Robert.Thompson on March 02, 2012, 06:08:03 AM
Hello:

The subject says it all - can GMail provide better 'voice quality' than say Anveo or VoIP.ms?

Thanks,

Rob.

Google voice/GTalk uses 711 codec. It should provide similar quality as other service providers using the same voice codec. Other factors might come into play regarding voice quality. Your previous tests using ping or trace route would be a good way to decide. Final test is actually making a call. Some differences are too small to actually notice.

Thanks QBZappy. :)

Is it possible to ping and/or traceroute my Gmail connection?

Thanks,

Rob.

My OBi connects to the following ip's:
173.194.76.125 = GOOGLE.COM (Domain name)  <- Should be Google Voice/Talk acct
http://www.whatismyip.com/tools/ip-address-lookup.asp

204.236.134.243 = AMAZON.COM (Domain name) <- should be OBiTalk network
http://www.whatismyip.com/tools/ip-address-lookup.asp

You can perform your tests on both ip addresses.

If you don't have a router which shows incoming/outgoing connections (ie:Tomato firmware), you can install a firewall which can show you this info. Comodo offers a free firewall for Windows. Just look for the ip of the OBi and look where it is connecting to. :)
