Title: Pre-purchase question
Post by: cork2win on June 07, 2012, 11:14:23 AM
I am totally new and have searched around a bit but can't find, or maybe can't understand, the answer to my basic question.

All of the setup instructions I see for the Obi110 say that it has to be connected to your router and your phone.  The area of our house that I want to use the phone is nowhere near our router.

Is it possible to set up this system when the physical phone you want to use will be nowhere near the router that needs to be plugged into the Obi device?

Thank you.

Set up a cordless base near the router and OBi and then put the handset(s) wherever you wish.

or you can purchase a wireless adapter like this to connect your OBi ATA to your wireless router, so you can put OBi ATA anywhere close to your phone base.

The OBiWiFi can only be used on the 202, it wouldn't work with the OBi110 which the OP refers to.

Thanks for the replies!

Duh, I hadn't even thought of using a remote phone.  That's a good solution.

The wifi on the 202 model is interesting as well.  Since I haven't purchased a unit yet, I could go up to the 202.

All good suggestions.  I'll have to read up some more and decide which way to go.  At least now I know there is a way to do it!

cork2win,

OBi 110 can connect to the PSTN. The other models don't have this ability. If you want to go 100% voip then you might want to consider the OBi 100 or 202.

Many people use existing house wiring (but disconnected from the phone company) to allow the other phones in the house to access an Obi device. If you have a phone in one room and a jack near the Obi, that would work. Just ensure the phone company side is disconnected!
