Title: Another look at G.722
Post by: engineercarl on September 24, 2012, 09:05:14 AM
I know this has been suggested in the past (last year), but I'd like to see G.722 looked at again as a codec for use in the Obi family of products.

The old saw has always been that a standard telephone will never make use of the extended range of frequencies, but there is an entire world of broadcast telephone hybrid equipment that will plug into an RJ-11 just as easy as a Trimline phone can.

Comrex (with their STAC/VIP) system has seen fit to adopt G722 into their broadcast hybrids. Perhaps Obi can be the lower cost alternative.

While we're at it, why not SILK and/or OPUS?

G.722 higher audio bandwidth codec sounds like fun to experiment with, particularly OBi to OBi. It is license free, or at least patent free,  according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.722
