Title: OBi100 displays generic GV number on outgoing calls (760-705-8888)
Post by: ilikebike on November 27, 2012, 08:27:48 PM
I went back a few pages and didn't see this.
I just setup my OBi100 and everything seems to be working great except on outgoing calls out number is showing as Google's default 760-705-8888 number instead of our Google Voice number. I check the FAQ and it states:

QuoteWhat is the number listed on people's caller ID when I call them using my Google Voice?
The number list on the callee's caller ID will be your Google Voice number. Please note Google Voice does no support caller ID name.

Our number was recently ported over from a T-Mobile@Home connection.

Any ideas?

ilikebike,

Welcome.

First, make sure that GV number you are showing is not a real number.

Second, "showing GV default instead of your GV number"? is that 760 number your GV number, and you are expecting to see the new ported number?

Thanks for the quick reply.

The number I posted is not our ported number. Our number begins in the (714) area code.

I was doing some quick googling of the outbound number is a default number that Google uses when dialing numbers from Gmail. (http://www.metafilter.com/96293/7607058888)

There's about 3 topics on this forum that reference that number but nothing I can go on.

If you just set up the account and ported your number that may be the problem.  Number porting is not immediate.  It may take some time for everything to start working.  All you can do is wait for that to work.
Here is a discussion about the wrong number showing up.

Make sure you have done the following in the mean time.

Did you make at least one call using Google talk?  If you didn't that may be the problem.  Turn chat on in gmail and install the talk plugin.  Make a call via Gmail.   Finally sign out of chat in Gmail.  This will probably fix your problem.

What number will show in caller ID when I place calls?

"If you are utilizing a Google Voice account with the same username as your Gmail account, then your Google Voice number will show in caller ID to those you call.

If you do not use Google Voice, then (760) 705-8888 will show to those you call in caller ID. You can upgrade to a full Google Voice account for free if you are in the United States and pick a new number to display to those you call."

Sounds like you need to make that first call to associate Chat with the GV number.

I've made 3 outbound calls from google voice so far and they are also showing that number instead of my ported number. Very odd.

Seems like an issue on Google's end and not with the OBihai. Could it be that the port just finished and hasn't updated yet?

As I said it can take time.  Features do not necessarily all begin to work at the same time.  For example text messaging may not work for days after the initial inbound calling begins to work.  I say give it three days after inbound calling begins to work then test it again.

I think you got it backwards. Your 1st call should be from the Google Chat, not GV.

Yeah, it seems to be slowly propagating. After about 6 more calls from Gmail, 4 were the right number. I think logging out of all Google services and clearing my gmail cache may have helped. I think I'll be fine from here on out. Consider this issues solved ;)

I must say you guys are quick! Didn't expect to get help so fast, I've already setup the Callcentric stuff for e911 and caller ID as well  ;D

I recently added a new GMAIL and Google Voice number (not Ported) to a new OBI. Sometimes when I place calls from the OBI, the called phone will display 760-705-8888. I will try again a few moments later, and the correct GV number displays. The results do not seem to be consistent, what is causing this? Is it a config on the OBI, Google Voice, or a glitch in the GV Servers?

I have also seen posts in 800notes dating back a few years about people getting calls from the same number.
