Title: Can i transfer my current number to a new obi?
Post by: mokenakam on December 28, 2012, 01:58:34 PM
Getting ready to cancel my ATT line will keep my U-verse internet over the same line.  Love to know if i can somehow keep my number and clean up on the savings this technology provides.  Can i transfer it to a VOIP provider?  Any recommendations prior to setting things in motion? Priorities or what to do first to do it right?

Thanks in advance for your help!  Happy New Year!

You must port your number before you cancel.  If you cancel the service and then try to port your number the carrier does not have to let you keep the number.  Find your new Voip provider and then start the process.
In my personal experience porting was a quick and easy process that took about three days total.  The process is primarily handled by the company you are porting the number to.   Most providers will allow you to port a number in to their services but occasionally there are rejections between certain providers.  Google Voice and landlines for instance.  In these cases you may need to port the number to a prepaid mobile phone first but don't worry about that unless you get a rejection.  Here are a couple post to help out if things get tricky but it is usually much simpler then it was in the two following posts.

One thing that may complicate things if your U-Verse is tied to the number that you are porting (similar to DSL). Then you need to separate U-Verse from the phone line.

If U-Verse works like cable - that is, internet and phone are provisioned independently - then the process is quite trivial.

I ported my toll-free number to Voip.Ms and although it took a while (they said toll frees do), it went very smoothly. I assume a regular phone number would go quickly and easily.

I've ported one number without trouble, my friend ported her number twice without problems.  My father has ported his number ...... I have no idea but he has done it a lot more then anyone else I know. He has had no problems.  So it's usually not a difficult process for most people.
