Title: No sound is heard by non-obi caller
Post by: lbarrera on April 07, 2011, 08:30:16 PM
So I just got my OBi-100 (HardwareVersion 2.8   SoftwareVersion   1.2.1 (Build: 2103)) I followed the instructions of setting it up and whatnot, set it up with GVoice, everything. I made a test call from my cell to the phone connected to the OBi and everything was good except for the part that the cell doesn't pick up any sounds from the OBi. Since I have 3 phones running off one base I picked up the other two and no luck. Tried another phone that had a different base and nothing. The weird thing is if I press the keys on either phones I can actually hear the keys being pressed on the cell phone. Off to the router I went and created a DMZ (demilitarized zone for those of you that don't know what it is) opened all the ports udp and tcp for the ip address of the OBi, no luck. Turned off the router's firewall, no luck. Then straight to the modem and did the same DMZ, ports and firewall and nothing. So I'm stuck. I work as IT specialist and this is definitely one of the few things that I cannot conquer. Help?! haha
I've also factory reset it about 5 times just to be sure.

Sorry for the long message, but I wanted you guys to know everything I've done and tested. Let me know if something isn't clear enough!

THANKS!!!!!! ;D

lbarrera,

Welcome to our forum.

A few questions about your problem:
1. Can you get 2-way audio if you make the call from your OBi phone to the cell phone
   (or any other numbers)?
2. Is your cell phone number one of your Google Voice account's contact number?
3. When you have this problem, can you hear the audio in the other direction
(from cell phone to the Obi phone)
4. Have you tried dialing **9 222 222 222 (echo test), or
**9 333 333 333 (free US test call), and check if they are working correctly?

Thank you.

Thanks for the response.

1. No 2-way audio whatsoever. I tried to the cell, softphone on my cell, other numbers.
2. Yes, the cell number is in the google voice contact list.
3. I can hear audio in the other direction, very clear. From the obi phone to the cell phone I only get sound if I press the keys.
4. I've tried both, I only get an echo if I press a key, but no echo from voice; and by calling the free US test call, I still couldn't hear a voice on my cell phone.

What are your thoughts?

This part of your statement has me puzzled and wondering how your phones are set up.

I made a test call from my cell to the phone connected to the OBi

You don't call the phone connected to the Obi, you call a service configured on the Obi; or you call a land line that is plugged into the Obi.

I can clarify.

I got the OBi running an rj11 cable to the Cordless base. The service configured on the OBi is google voice.

OK, got that.

Then straight to the modem and did the same DMZ, ports and firewall and nothing.

I don't know anything about managing a modem.
Don't take offense but I have to ask the standard question, did you power cycle the modem after unplugging the router?

No offense taken! :)

I did power cycle the modem to make sure the IP address was refreshed when I plugged in the OBi.

lbarrera,

Hi

I would try a corded phone to see if that would make a difference.

Alright, I was able to get my hands on good corded phone, I've gotten the same results.

Any more ideas?  I appreciate the effort by the way!

Everyone else that had trouble, found success when they tried the device straight on the modem. Then they started looking at the router.

You said,  "Then straight to the modem and did the same DMZ, ports and firewall and nothing".
Is this a modem/router combination or what. You gave indications that there was some management options when on the modem so I guess it wasn't actually straight on a modem.

Nope, I tried two different routers that I tried the OBi on, D-Link DIR-615 and a Netgear WGR614 v7. I also tried it on two different modems, both being CLEAR modems. Has anyone have issues with CLEAR?

I had problems with dropped calls on my dir615, sound was ok. I put the deivce straigt to my motorola surfboard modem and the problem went away.

I had a new router that I had been putting of changing to, so I just changed the d link for it and have had no problems since with factory settings on the Cisco router.

So just an update, I contacted OBi support and we ran some tests and they couldn't come up with a reason for why the issue was happening. They sent a replacement on Friday afternoon and I got it today, plugged it in, set up the google voice service on it, and it worked, just like the other one should have. No issues or anything.
I compared both of the OBi boxes, and I noticed the first one had a scratched up label (the one on the bottom of the OBi) and a missing screw cap, remember that I've had the OBI for 5 days, counting today so I can only think that the OBi was either used or defective from when it was sent from Amazon. Regardless of why it didn't work, I'm more than happy with Obihai Support. Couldn't have asked for more!

jimates: I ran into the same problem you were having with my DIR-615.  I gave my OBI a static address on the router and then went to advanced tab and created a PORT FORWARDING RULE, opening all TCP and UDP ports, 1-65535. It has not dropped any calls since I did that. Just in case any else is getting dropped calls.

Thanks to all!
