Title: Cananadian Pots line to Google Voice
Post by: erocs on June 22, 2013, 06:47:18 AM
When a person using a Canadian Pots line dials a google voice number in the US, they have to dial 1+area code+number.

Is that long distance for the caller? If not why not?

If it is long distance, is there any way around that?

thanks

Yes, with the rare exception of having the GV number be for an exchange in your local calling area,

If it is long distance, is there any way around that?

1. Have the person get an OBi. If the person is a technically inclined and/or sufficiently motivated, that works.

2. Get a phone number, from a SIP provider, that is local to the area you want to let the caller dial as a local call. That is not free-- but very probably less than  $3 per month. This will let anybody from that neighborhood call as a local call.

3. Get some kind of unlimited long distance plan from the local phone company... That's gonna cost the big bucks.

4. Have the person get an enhancement to the cellphone plan that has plenty of included air time including calls to you.

Thanks very much for the very complete answer...I thought that was the case, but believe it or not a lot of searching did not give me the complete picture.

Now on to the options...just got my Obi110 on Friday, and have set it up with google voice.

There is a free option for a person in Canada to call you.
You would have to get a free SIP service and register your OBi to them.
The person in Canada would call a SIPBroker access number then dial your SIP service code and account number.

First, check if there is a local Canadian access number for your friend here:
http://www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/action/pstnNumbers

If you want to go this route post back here and I will walk you thru the setup.

azrobert....didn't wait for tomorrow...followed your instructions which were excellent...and worked like a charm.
thanks very much for that.

now...I suppose if I wanted to do this without having someone dialing all these numbers every time, I would port my number over for $25 which according to Callcentric can be done, and pay $5.95/mth for personal unlimited incoming, and still use google voice for outgoing.

or

do you have any other recommendations?

thanks again

Some people like Voip.ms. Their rates seem about the same as Callcentric. I believe their porting is cheaper. I have no experience with them.

There is another free way to do this. Less dialing, but still a pain. It would use the OBi110 callback feature. A Winnipeg caller would call your GV number and hang up after 1 or 2 rings. If they don't hang up before 10 seconds (default) the OBi110 will answer the call. The OBi110 will use the callerid and SP1 for the callback. After the caller answers the callback they will be prompted to Continue Call, Make New Call or Another Callback. They would enter "1" to be connected to your phone.

I setup 2 numbers (111-1111 and 222-2222) for people that can call your GV number without any extra expense. I defined a PIN to prevent people from making an outbound call on the OBi110.

Change Voice Services -> SP1 Service -> X_InboundCallRoute to:

{(10241111111|12042222222):ph},{(1204xxxxxxx):aa($1)},{ph}

Voice Services -> Auto Attendant ->

PrimaryLine: SP1 Service
UsePin: Checked
Pin1: (any digits)

azrobert...many thanks

will try this as well....very interesting...will report back

azrobert...tried this...configured as you indicated....but I never get a call back after hanging up...must be doing something wrong....sorry...every time I try and put the string in the SP1, and setup the auto attendant as you indicate and do all the reboots it always reverts back to default for some reason.

You can simplify the process for people calling you via sipbroker.
If you look at my signature you will see a link to http://www.e164.org.  Sign up with e164 and register your real phone numbers.  Since you already signed up for callcentric forward those numbers to 1777MYACCOUNT@in.callcentric.com.  Replace 1777MYACCOUNT with your callcentric account number.  You can do multiple phone numbers if you like.  Then when someone wants to call you through a sipbroker gateway they don't need to dial a bunch of strange numbers.  Instead they dial one of the sipbroker gateways and enter your real phone number without any extra codes.

giqcass, thanks for the reply

I signed up with e164 and believe I registered my callcentric number. I think I am a little dense today because I am not doing something right. If I try and register the phone number as 1777xxx-xxxx it won't take it, the only thing it will take is seven numbers xxx-xxxx it took it, and it also asks you for area code, I did that as well. I never got the verification call, so can't get the pin number to enter.

when you say forward those numbers to 1777MYACCOUNT@in.callcentric.com, where do I do that? I know I have to substitute my callcentric number xxx-xxxx for MYACCOUNT.

I was looking on e164 for the example page, but there is nothing there.

so I am stuck at the moment as I am supposed to be entering the pin. I am reluctant to keep trying because it says if you try too many times the number will be suspended.

thanks again

When you call the GV number does the phone connected to the OBi Phone Port ring and what is the CallerID?

If the local phone doesn't ring can you wait until the Auto Attendant picks up and note how many rings it took.

Yes it rings...the caller ID is 204-XXX-XXXX

Strange. When a US number calls GV the CallerID is 11 digits.

Try this:
{(1?2041111111|1?2042222222):ph},{(1?204xxxxxxx):aa($1)},{ph}

This will match on 10 or 11 digits.

azrobert, not quite sure what the problem is.

first I make the change to the Obi. After I reboot as the Obi wants when I press submit, I don't know why it keeps going back to the default Ph.

then I phone GV # with a seperate land line not plugged into the Obi, hang up after one ring, never get a call back, but the phone connected to the Obi then rings and I get a message from Google hangouts saying I missed a call from 204-XXX-XXXX

sorry to be such a pain

Yep, you're a big pain!
Just kidding. LOL

You're courteous and report back, so I don't mind.
What bugs me is when posters don't acknowledge if my suggestions worked or not.
Not even a thank you.

Anyway, I assume you are updating the OBi via the WEB interface and not OBiTalk. If you have Auto Provisioning on, OBiTalk will overwrite changes you make. If this is the case I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.

To turn off Auto Provisioning:
System Management -> Auto Provisioning -> OBiTalk Provisioning
Method: Disabled

When the callback works the Auto Attendant intercepts the call and the OBi110 phone will not ring.

I understand you confusion.  You register your real phone number.  Your Google Voice number,  your home number, or cell phone, ect....  Then E164 will ask for "Protocol and hostname or contact information:"  For that use sip and 1777MYACCOUNT@in.callcentric.com

You will get 2 calls.  One will ring your sip address to verify it is valid.  The second may not come immediately.  It will call your real phone number to verify you own it.  Make sure you have a pen and pencil ready.  They only tell you the code once and it is quick.  Enter the pin on e164.  After this the phone has been validated.

Now people can call you via sipbroker by entering your real number instead of using a dialing code and your account number.  You can register multiple numbers.

giqcass...thank you...between trying azrobert's method and yours...I think my head hurts  ::) however, I managed to put in my google voice number successfully, got the two phone calls, got the right pin# so all is well.

So to summarize...someone wants to call me, they dial the local access number in sipbroker, an automated voice comes on the line telling them to input the number they wish to call, so they enter my google voice number which is 1-956-XXX-XXXX and the phone rings on Obi. But does that not mean they are still phoning long distance from their end, or they are not because they are going through sipbroker?

thanks again for your patience

As long as the sipbroker access number is a local call no one pays long distance.  The cool part of the sipbroker gateway is people can call you from many countries without paying long distance.

You might find these articles interesting.  Many phones allow the ability to add a pause during the dialing sequence.  A pause is usually represented by a comma.  Someone can add you as a contact in the following manner.  Assuming 1956XXXXXXX is your Google Voice number the following string would dial you on an Android phone in one click.
12044804085,,1956XXXXXXX

Have to thank you both azrobert and giqcass, for the help and patience. Very much appreciated.

azrobert...finally got it working, works perfectly.

giqcass...thanks for the info and the links. I will be sure to read them and try it out. I have an Android Phone.

Although some of these things seem a little daunting at first (I am definitely not a youngster), the reward at the end, to make things easier, is certainly worth it.

Would not have been able to accomplish this without help from both of you.
