Title: Running Obi alongside Comcast phone service
Post by: Fangio on August 27, 2013, 10:39:32 PM
I just got my Obi 202 today and plan to set it up this weekend. I have an existing Google Voice number that I want to use to test it out before taking the plunge and porting my landline number into Google Voice (via a T-Mobile burner). Is this possible? Can I set up the Obi and use it with my Google Voice while continuing to use my landline?

Yes.

Were you planning to use separate phones? If so, they should work independently.

If you have a cordless phone, plug that into the Obi while you test.
If you decide to ditch Comcast at some point, and want to use your home wiring, there are threads on that topic

Thanks to you both for your replies. Got the Obi set up and based on a couple of short test calls it seems to be working just fine.

I noticed the threads a while back about how to use your phone wiring, but not sure it's worth the trouble. If I understand correctly, I can use a cordless phone with a base unit and a bunch of satellites without going to as much work and pretty much get the same result. Maybe I'm missing something.

I'll test it for a while and more than likely ditch the Comcast voice service. This is cool!

Yep, I used to run the OBi110 with my Google Voice numbers and AT&T landline on a Panasonic cordless phone with 6 handsets. I disconnected the AT&T landline a short while after that.

Comcast may have used the same or similar connection point of presence outside your house. If that is the case, opening up that box and unclipping the modular plug should remove house wiring from their equipment.

Still, a wireless base and handsets would work too.
