Title: Sound Choppy, setup QOS?
Post by: ThaDraGun on January 03, 2014, 10:49:08 AM
My wife just got off the phone and said the sound was kind of choppy. Im using voip.ms. I changed servers to see if that helps. I was on montreal, changed to chicago. myself I have also noticed google voice calls are really choppy. I know google voice is going soon so that doesnt really matter to me. I checked my internet speed. and its ok Approx 30/10

Changing voip.ms servers may help but I thought I would setup qos on my router and that also may help.

Not sure how to set it up tho, never used that feature before.
Obi110
ASUS RT-N66U

In my router it asks for:

Service Name (just a drop down so im guessing it doesnt matter much)
Source IP or MAC I know both so I put in mac address

Destination Port
Protocol
Transferred (kb)

I dont know what any of these options should be.

Then the last one is
Priority - i put to Highest

Try this,

Switching your OBi's Ethernet ports to 100 mb/s full duplex:

1. Dial *** (wait for response) then press 0
2. Enter option 27 and press #
3. Press 1 to set a new value
4. Enter a value of 1 and press #
5. Press 1 to confirm/save
6. Hang up
7. Wait for the OBi to reboot

Before I do that is there any way to know if it is already set on 100 mb/s full duplex?

EDIT:
Nevermind, found this from one of QBZappys posts:

How to verify the current setting of the OBi's ethernet ports 10 or 100 mb/s full duplex:
1. Dial *** 0
2. Enter option 27 and press #

At this point the OBiMAN will read back the current value:
0= 10 mb/s
1= 100 mb/s

Mine was set as 0, so I changed it. Its now 100 mb/s so I'll try that out. Dont know why that isnt set default. Thanks.

Anyone know about the QOS, or is that not needed?

The typical call runs less than 100kbps in each direction, so either setting should be more than adequate.

If your internet connection is completely saturated with uploading and/or downloading, then QoS should help if you prioritize the traffic to and from your OBi.

Was your connection saturated when the sound was choppy?

Nope, wasnt doing much on the internet at the time of the call. we have our pc schedueled to only do downloads at night

Then in that case QoS isn't going to help - the problem lies elsewhere, but if setup properly, it won't hurt either.
