Trying to understand Obi device and google voice

I have a google voice account for a while now. Just got my obi device today and tried to set it up.
I am confused.. . .
Do I have to have a service provider other than google to make and receive calls?

When I try to set up the obi with google voice, I get a message that the service is not configured. If I call my google voice number with another phone, I do get an email in my google voice inbox.
I can call out with google voice on my computer, but if I pick up the phone to call out, I get an error message that says that service is not configured. Also when I try and call my google voice number, the phone connected to the obi does not ring. 
What am I missing here?

Hi:

It sounds like you made some sort of setup error.  Yes, you can simply use a working Google Voice account.
