Hello:

My PC is in Montreal, Quebec Canada.

Is one of these VOIP servers better than the other for me to use?

If so, why?

I'd suggest you run ping to the servers of interest and collect the measurements.
Traceroute measurements can be quirky and they tend to depend a lot on how
the corresponding ICMP traffic is prioritized and handled within routers in the path.

The one piece of info that traceroute can give you that may be useful is that number
of hops from your router to the voip server at the other end. In that respect
the Anveo #1 server seems to be going through fewer nodes. But the other
routes are not that far off anyway.

L.

PS: I think the last traceroute to Anveo #2 is incomplete.

I should also point out that unless the SIP server/provider servers proxy your actual
voice traffic (RTP), the measurements you take may correspond only to SIP traffic (signaling traffic).
In other words, what you measured, it may not reflect the voice latency you will experience during calls.

MB..

I'm confused: your PC is in Montreal, QC pinging a server in Montreal, and the first host on your traceroute is in Dallas, Texas?

Are these pings actually being run from your PC, of from somewhere else?

Or are you perhaps connected to a VPN?

I was doing the traceroutes from a web site which provided that tool. I'm in Montreal but God knows where that web site is.

Isn't that how you do it?

Thanks,

Rob.

From a command prompt (Windows), type e.g.
tracert montreal.voip.ms

On Mac or Linux, it's:
traceroute montreal.voip.ms

Thanks Stewart, lk96 & MB..  :)

Sorry for being such a newbie at this stuff.
